So after 2 months, I finally made "The Call" and filed a claim for the damage to the k1100 after the sidestand folded up on it on a ride in Oct.
The upper main fairing is cracked at the antenna and the left from mirror is destroyed as well as the left turn signal (I had the bags off that day).
I'll take the opportunity to see about getting the bags paint matched (they aren't painted orginally, but are color matched plastic that faded fast) and replace the mirror on the other side.
For some reason they sent me a DMV form to file for the accident. It wasn't a traffic accident and I don't want it on my record. It's a comprehensive, not collision claim so I need to educated my Claims rep (who is named Jug).
But other than that, the clams process is moving quickly and has been mostly painless. My prior experience with Progressive and filing a claim a few years ago was really good. I switched all my bikes and vehicles to Progressive earlier in the year because with the multi vehicle discount they were competitive and the service when you file a claim was very good. So far, that move is proving a good one. I've hear rumors Progressive jacks up your rates after a year. If so, I'll go elsewhere. No biggie.
I've missed riding the K. But it is nice having three other bikes. Even if I do generally only take the Husky out on dirt. Once she gets all spiffed up like she's goin to the prom, I'm going to have to plan a nice reunion ride. And if you hear any odd news stories about someone having a bizarre intimate relationship with a motorcycle in California... that's not me. _________________ M N B

I only have my bikes insured for liability but Progressive did not jack my rates after the first year.
On the K75S that I brought back to life earlier this year I didn't bother to insure it since MCs are exempt from WA state's mandatory liability law and I didn't plan to ride it very much. I called the Tuesday before the Wednesday I left to have Progressive put it on my policy so I'd be legal in OR and CA while riding to Sacramento. When I got to Sacramento on Friday and sold it I had them drop it from my policy. They didn't charge me a dime for that three days of coverage - probably because it would've cost more to process it than they would've billed me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

i like geico. they are most definitely the lowest rate i was able to get on my car, by like $300+ every 6 months. so that was easy. and because i had my car there i just put my bike there. after a year they still do not offer multi-vehicle discount for having a car and bike insured with them because they have different account for car/home and bike/rv/watercraft/etc. kinda bogus, but the money i save with car insurance makes it okay to me. my biggest gripe is that i pay more than my roommate who has a 2008 330xi because i haven't been with them as long and have 1 speeding ticket from almost 3 years ago now. i mean, we have the same coverage on our cars value wise and his is lower than mine in every category, even the amount for rental coverage! so stupid, but it should go back down in a couple months when the ticket goes off my record. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

My coverage is split at this point.
I have West Bend for my Car/Homeowners policy as I can get the multi-vehicle and homeowners(the call it financial stability) discount and a combined policy discount.
The bike are with Progressive still. When I got the 1st bike in '05 West Bend wouldn't write me a cycle policy as I hadn't had my cycle endorsement for 5 years.
I get discounts for the 2nd bike, no tickets, having passed a riders ed class, being over a certain age. _________________ Ride safe.

Dairyland liability through the local BMW shop here in Austin, Tx. Think I pay yearly around 80 bucks for the two RS and /7 bikes. _________________

It's short for some Indian name. But he's based out of Modesto, CA (2 hrs away), not Mumbai, India. _________________ M N B

The claims adjuster just contacted me.
When he contacted me after I dropped the bike off, there was some concern about the total cost and it approaching a value that would total the bike. The adjuster tried to stay under that value by suggesting a fiberglass patch.
The service manager tacked on every little piece he could think of. Seriously. Left Engine guard (barely scratched) - $387, driver footpeg, passenger footpeg (which was up and unscratched in the accident, but I guess it had a tiny scratch on it and he figured he could pile it on), the rubber inserts for both, the shift lever (unbent and AFAIK, unscratched). So I asked the rep to remove all those items and go for a fairing replacement. It took him two days to get back to me, but they went for it. They cut me a $100 discount called an appearance allowance, which will lower my deductible to $400, too.
So it was a nerve wracking two days where I considered totaling the bike and taking the cash for it, revoking the claim and dropping $250 to replace the mirror and turn signal and ride it with the cracked and slightly bent fairing, and a few other options.
I did notice the service manage wasn't bright enough to add the fairing support bracket to the list. So I guess they're going to bend it back into shape? I'll probably have to pay the $243 for that. I think there may be two of those, though... sigh... The thing is, when I talked to him after dropping it off, I mentioned it would need the bracket...
But I'm happy they won't be totaling the bike. She'll be looking pretty good when I get her back. _________________ M N B

Update on progress.
So it turned out the fairing support bracket was actually broken. Progressive approved replacing it. I thought it was just bent.
I got a call today giving me an update. Some of the parts are in, some are waiting to come back from the painter. Probably 2 more weeks, which puts them right on track for their original estimate of mid February.
No word that any of the parts were going to be difficult to obtain.
I remembered that it was due for a minor service interval, so I called them up to as them to fit that in since all the body work is off.
They're also painting my saddle bag lids Aspen Silver (to match the silver in the black and silver paint scheme) and replacing the right mirror. She'll be looking primo. Get her home, slap a new PR2 on front and an Azaro on the rear (have had them waiting for some time) and it's time for a ride! =)
I didn't take detailed pics of the crack in the fairing. Sorry. But I will take several of her all dressed up for prom night and post them once I get her back from the shop. _________________ M N B

Another Update:
The painter apparently has a problem with ... actually painting. They've been sitting on my stuff for months.
Three or four weeks back, my previously, patient and understanding emails to my insurance agent turned much more aggressive. I had really wanted the k11 ready for a ride mid April and it was supposed to be ready in mid-February.
Well, that didn't happen. Despite increased pressure prior to the ride. So a week after the ride, I finally get a call, the parts were back. I requested time to inspect the parts prior to reinstallation, so I went down to look at them.
The main fairing looks ok, although the pin stripe is sloppy. There is noticable brush buldge in a few spots. But that's nothing compared to the saddle bag lids. A simple one color job and they didn't even fill and sand them first. They painted right over the scratches. While it isn't glaring, it's rather noticeable.
Rather than wait another 4 months, I told the shop I expected a heavy discount and to reassemble the bike.
Reassembly is what? A 2, maybe 3 hour job for a shop like that? 2.5 days have elapsed and still no call to pick up the bike. I am not going to believe they have any work there that has been on the plate longer than mine, but clearly finishing up my bike isn't a priority for them.
I'm really not surprised. Since about 2000, CalMoto in Mountain View has had the most abysmal service department of any dealership of any brand that I've ever gone to. I'm sure there is worse, but usually they damage my bike. I took the bike to them this time, because they had a good rep for dealing with paint and body work. Apparently that rep is definitely undeserved.
And the complete lack of hustle, even from the new service manager is really very disappointing. The owner passed away in November and he was a really good guy whom I had the pleasure of riding with on a few occasions. He would not be pleased.
However, I should be getting the bike back soon. Unless they refuse to cut me a hefty discount, in which case, I will reject the paint, albeit reluctantly. _________________ M N B
