I'm looking into getting a pair of electric gloves for some cold weather riding. Maybe a vest too.
Any recommendations?

I bought some Warm-n-Safe heated glove liners when they were on sale last year for $25. They work very well.
http://www.warmnsafe.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_74_90&products_id=279
I also have a pair of Gerbings heated gloves that I found on Craig's List for $5 (wifey told hubby he had to quit riding) last summer but haven't tried them out yet. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have had the opposite experience that FD had.
First off, I am very careful with gear and treat it very well. But I have had 5, yes FIVE, warm and safe gloves fail on me (random left/right). I always gently plug/unplug gloves and never put any pulling force on the wires themselves. ALSO I found that each set had various, nearly painful "hot spots" when turned up to full power.
note: in defense of W n' S, the dealer where I bought the first pair (then returned each failed pair under warranty) called the company and found out that some were manufactured with faulty junctions where the black wire connects with the heating element. Thank you to the folks at White Horse Gear for doing the warranty returns. They would bench test each pair that I brought back and find that one glove of the pair had failed
That being stated, in the interest of comparison (and for my cold hands) I purchased a pair of Gerbing's G3 gloves. MUCH BETTER. No function problems for the entire fall 2010 riding season and no "hot spots" on my hands even at full power when the temperatures dropped.
Your results may vary, but this was my experience. _________________ John & Cathy

+1 gerbings. i have the jacket liner and the leather gloves (i think g3? whatever the model was right before they introduced the new microwires) i love them. they are kinda bulky, but don't inhibit my hands at all and are fantastically warm.
edit: the only downside is that they are kinda pricey. but, as i have started to discover, usually higher priced items are that way because they are that much better. and these definitely fit that description. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

+1 on the Gerbings G3 heated gloves. Kind of a fumble fest getting hooked
up at times but well worth the effort. They even work very well in cold
weather without being plugged in. (Left my jacket liner plug at home one bright
sunny day - coming home that evening I missed the jacket heat more than
the glove heat)
I got mine at a spring open house/sale/test rides event. BMW of course. _________________ Dave Norris KOG 248

In the April 2010 issue of MCN there's a review of heated gear, jacket liners, gloves, and controllers. Thay rated these as the best:
Liner: FirstGear Warm & Safe: $200
Gloves: Gerbing G3: $140
Controller: EXO2 Stormrider: $ 54
I don't have heated gloves but do enjoy a Widder vest, especially the warm neck part. That's almost as nice as having a 20 year old red head nibbling on the neck...... but I digress. _________________ "I don't believe in the after life, although I am bringing a change of underwear." - Woody Allen

+1 on the Gerbings.
Purchased a pair 3 yrs ago, one failed last fall. Gerbings lifetime warranty they replaced them, free upgrade to the micowire version, and the new ones are even better. _________________ Ride safe.

With a temperature control. The Gerbings control sucks. The knobs are too difficult to turn once you get the gloves on - and there is no way to tell where they are set.
Fortunately, most of this heated gear uses the same connectors. MCN likes the Warm N Safe controller - I'm fairly certain that's the one they liked. Its a control pad with a display - much easier to use.
I stupidly bought the Gerbings controller. Now I'll have to buy the other one... _________________ Jim

Thanks Jim. So with a 140 bucks purchase I have have to fork out an additional 60-70 bucks for a controller? This is big turn off. _________________

Yeah, I guess so. That's what I did. The Warm N Safe controller is cheaper than the Gerbings, IIRC. _________________ Jim

That's the combination I have too. Dual circuit controller clips to the left side of my tankbag, power cord runs straight down, tucks behind the side cover and plugs into the outlet by the coils.
Yeah, it is some $$ to get this set up but as Scott (& others?) stated at least the Gerbings stuff is lifetime warrantied. And works very well.
Wish everything that I have bought for motorcycling was like that.

The vest should be your first priority. If you put heat back into your core area the body will keep the peripherals (fingers and toes) warmer. Of course I'm making an assumption that you have heated grips, if not I can see that heated gloves could be a priority too. I simply couldn't ride in cold weather (below 40 deg F) without electric gear - too miserable, too tensed up, and when it gets bad as it did once for me on an unfaired bike in BC you can slip into hypothermia. Buy the gear, get good stuff and it will last you for years. _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

For cold weather(sub 40) skip the vest and get a jacket liner. Vests do work and make a big difference but your arms will still be cold. BTDT. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Yes....I went through several pair of Firstgear heated gloves and had them exchanged under warranty. DON'T go there.
Go with Gerbings as I eventually did. Great stuff. _________________ John & Cathy

Crap! I shoulda waited. I don't think I've used my China made ones twice since I bought them. Part of the problem was all the damn wires (some of which are necessary).
Just picked up the wireless controller - much better design than Gerbings - it's First Gear/Warm and Safe - hope it holds up better than their gloves...
