My 1993 K1100rs is making what I can only decribe as a clacking sound
(if you think clack clack clack clack...that'd be pretty close) on tick-over...about twice a second...in drive, it dissapears...and speeding the engine up, it dissapears, (but seems occasionaly to catch), normal driving, it's not there.......has anyone any suggestions/advice/come across this before?...
I asked at the local BMW dealers in Derbyshire..Pidcocks....they said (don't laugh!) 'they all do that'............which I don't believe for a second.......
thanks

The K1100RS I had would do it too. Only in neutral, clutch lever out.

If I pulled the lever in, it would stop.

I know my older airheads would do this exact thing, when at operating temperature. The clacking sound, when in neutral with clutch lever out, comes from a 'relaxed' transmission...bit of chatter noise came from no tension on the gears. Maybe it's the same with K bikes.

On K1100s it's the timing gear up front.

Wouldn't be the alternator driver rubbers that are worn and making noise, would it?

That's more rumbly than ticky.

I took mine to the dealer, same noise, same response. "Sounds like a good strong K Bike."

Thanks for all the help on this topic.....much appreciated
I'm much easier in my mind now....thought something was about to explode out of the crackcase........

perhaps I'll take a look at the timing chain tensioner over winter, if it's easy to get at....anyone done it?...do you have to dismantle half the engine in the process?

It's more likely the rails than the tensioner. Not that big of a job.

My bike "Clacked" when I bought it at 18K miles. It now has 48K and is smooth as a babies ass.
Go figure!

This interested me as mine started "clacking" after I adjusted the tickover speed down to 950rpm +/- 50. At 1050rpm no clacking !
The clacking seemed to origininate in the gearbox/clutch area to my ear ?

It's a common noise just before the crankshaft breaks causing the pistons to slam into the valves bending them all, holing all the pistons and bending all the con rods, pretty much need a new motor.

Only kidding! Laughing Laughing Mine does it too, but only when it's cold. Suspect it's the timing chain lash as per FD as that what it sounds like.

Thanks Drikko,
wife says my underpants are completely ruined (before reading sentence 2) ... :0)

Hi Granth,
just purchased a stethoscope...let you know outcome...but if I raise the revs to say 1200....it goes away..APART from an occasional 'catch' which seems to slow the motor very briefly....on taking up drive and when running goes away....on hol this week on IOW...so no playing with it at the moment.....

Tony

my 93 LT does that same thing; posted an inquiry when I first got it -- last year -- my prev owner (the only) said it was the header ..... I called it "header frap" and put in the question to the Zen masters here; I think Drake first suggested the Monkey nuts on the Alt; now he's says that should be a
"rummbling more that a clak" -- don't know and havent' wrenched it out, but it's still there 50% of the time ......

Recently I balanced the throttle bodies and adjusted the tick-over and the clacking noise disappeared......Now ticks over sweetly. Razz

I always wondered about the 36,000 mile service on the service sheet, "Renew the lining on the chain tensioner rail" - anyone actually ever done that?

Hi, Ted,
When I bought my '96 K1100LT (in 1997), I asked the dealer mechanic about that. He answered by saying when he was at K1100 school, the instructor was asked a similar question. The instructor's answer was that all of you are BMW dealer mechanics. You have dealt with bikes with quite high mileages. How many of you have EVER had or heard of a problem with the cam chain tensioner rail? No hands were raised. The instructor then said that on bikes with very high mileages, it might be a good idea. FYI, I sold my '96 with 122k miles on it and the cam chain tensioner rail had not been changed. It now has over 150k miles, and I still don't think it has been changed.
