|

I'm looking at getting a K11 but have a question regarding how prevalent pinging is, especially to those who ride in hot climates (95 to 100+) and how difficult it is to remedy. After doing a search on the forum regarding ping issues I came across a thread from 2008 that seemed to indicate it was an issue but not much on what to do about it. I have an R1150GS thats been a real bugger to get ping free.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Mine has never pinged at all, even in extreme 100+ temps. _________________ K1100RS '97

Both of mine are from the early 90s. Neither has ping access but they do both have Pong access. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I've ridden in temps well over 100 degrees F - no ping. The K computer seems to have that pretty well under control. _________________ Jim

I should add that I had a pinging problem in my landcruiser. Changing to 95 octane petrol (from 91) was a temporary fix, but it turned out to be a very dirty air temp sensor feeding wrong info to the EFI. Not sure if the K11 has one of those. _________________ K1100RS '97

Yep..well..as Premium as it gets around here...91. Put some 100 in it a while back and it really liked that stuff...but at $7.50/gal and 2 hours drive its a bit unreasonable!

If you're running 91 then gas isn't the issue.
If you have a timing light available you might want to pull the cover off of the Hall Effect Sensor to check the timing but even just pulling that off and eyeballing it should give you an idea if the timing is properly set. Looking at the HES from the front, the little notch on the right side should be lined up with the notch on the place where it mounts.
Or it might be a bad throttle position sensor.
It's not normal for Ks to ping, even on regular gas. This, of course, is why your search turned up little.
Since you're a buyer, use the ping to talk the price down - but only if you're willing to put a little work and maybe a few dollars into getting it running right. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Having reread your post I am confused. Are you asking if pinging is a problem in the K11s or how to get rid of pinging in a K11? If you are asking if they ping I think Duck answered that question for you. Yours is the first post that I can remember regarding pinging. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I guess my question is, having never owned a K11, when properly tuned are they prone to pinging under any circumstances (very hot temps...rode with my daughter in 100+ yesterday). I was informed by my local BMW dealer tech that my current bike, R1150GS, is indeed prone to pinging and the only sure fire way to rid completely the pinging problems of the 1150 boxer is to go with an after market device that richens and/or adjusts timing. I'm looking at either the K11 or K12 and if one is prone to pinging or not...that would be helpful in being a discriminator. From what Duck said, and others who chimed in, it doesn't seem as though its a common issue with the K11's
Thanks,

Thanks for the helpful info...when you say "K's don't ping" does that mean both K11's and K12's? Hence, it's not a good discriminator? Pardon my ignorance as, I have never been accused of being a very high wattage bulb!
Thanks,

In 50,000 miles on the K11 and around 50,000 on K75s, riding in cold and very hot, I have never had any experience of pinging. I've also never heard of any pinging issues on any of the classic k bikes. Heat from the gas tank, yes _________________

Thank you gentlemen for the helpful information...I am proceeding down the path of K11 acquisition/ownership with greater confidence!
Greatly appreciated.

OK - so they don't ping - but they do make a shlt load of other noises...
Most of which you can't hear - especially with a Remus or Staintune... _________________ Jim

If you lug them too much, the sound can resemble "ping-ing".
Keep the rev's up higher, not a problem. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi,
I live in El Paso, TX, elevation about 4000 ft. I have had 2 K1100LT's, one on which I put 110k miles and the other 20k (hit a deer). I traveled from Tequisquiapan, QRO, Mexico to Worcester, MA (north to south) and Phoenix, AZ to the USA East Coast (east to west). I used Mexican regular unleaded (Magna Sin), Mexican premium, US regular unleaded (85, 86 or 87 pump octane, depending on location), mid-grade (seldom) and US premium (91, 92 or 93 pump octane, depending on location). Never once did I ever hear a ping. Ever! _________________ Ride Safe,
