All those years I was based in Minneesowtah and no one was interested in a gathering along the north shore of Gitche Gumee. Now I'm out west and j o wants to ride the Big Lake.
Fine. So "Hungry Buffalo" becomes "Hungree Superior"? Good idea, but "Hungree Superior" is a lame name. Now Hungree Angry Trout makes more sense. And them trouts is fine eatin'.
But if j o is thinking a ride AROUND the Big Lake (as the Pashnit post describes), that's quite a ride. Old Geezers would need to plan on at least a week no matter where they're coming from. My preference would be camping along the way (socializing around a campfire), but I know not all would be up for this.
An alternative would be a short (one-or two-day) main meeting along the North Shore (Duluth to Grand Marais) followed by the Superior Loop Tour for those more ambitious.
I'd be in for such a ride. Who else? _________________ tlp

I would be.
The Superior Circle Duluth to Duluth is a 1000mile Saddle Sore. So 2-3 days would not be too bad.
Plus a ride with JO--priceless.

'Kay, here's the deal.
j o sez he and Ms Bug are unable to lock in on the schedule and we should set a date that works best for most. This also opens up the possiblity that we could meet in the Black Hills of SD instead.
So here are the options:
Hungree Angree Troutt - Ride based around North Shore of Lake Superior (Duluth to Grand Marais, MN) with option to complete loop around lake.
Hungry Buffalo - Meet in Black Hills, possibly somewhere like Custer State Park. Maybe two nights' stay with one day focused on riding.
Depending on preferences, the time frame would be after the 4th, but before the end of July. The Sturgis Rally is 9-15 August this year - my thoughts are to avoid that if we want to come to the Black Hills.
It seems like a Friday through Sunday might work best for folks, but mid-week riding would see less traffic in these tourist areas if you Old Geezers could swing it.
Lining up lodging at this stage will be a challenge for either place, but should be possible with a bit of effort. Camping cabins (similar to those at HMSP) and tent sites should be available for either the Troutt or the Buffalo.
It may be late in the game for folks to plan something like this, but the arrangements on the destination end would still be doable for another week or so.
So, I propose if we get a group of four or more that can agree on a time and location, we squeeze the trigger. But we would need to know by June 1. If the planets don't align by then, I say we try again next year.
Vote early and... once is enough. _________________ tlp

Current tally:
j o - Could maybe make the Troutt, no guarantees.
miKeinWIs - Could make Troutt or Buffalo
Flying Duck - Is up for Buffalo
Lord of Snarebottom - Well, federal agents are trying to figure out how he pulled this one off. Since the Greenpeace banner, sphincters have been tight up there.
Klinker - Still up for either
Three riders in the Black Hills would be worth the effort for me. A few more would make it even better. Chime in before 1 June. _________________ tlp

I'm going to be up in the Black Hills mid-late July for about a week. Have to double check the calendar for exact dates. _________________ Ride safe.

Current count:
Three probables and two maybes for a meet in the Black Hills.
Whether or not to commit and start planning is a borderline call in my view. If I heard the other probables weigh in strongly, we could go forward. If not, no big deal. Next year may work better.

I have made some assumptions. Specifically, we would gather and stay two nights (20 & 21 July, or 21 & 22 July). I'm not sure if Scott_Anderson would lodge with the group or just ride during the day. I've checked the public cabins but found none available on these dates. Here are some other options:
Cabins in the Hills
Depending on numbers, one or two of these cabins are available. If only four of us needed a bed, Cabin 14 has three beds and a fold-out sofa and is available any of those nights - $110/night. If we needed more room, a combination of Cabins 4 & 5 ($190/night) or 6 & 17 ($180/night) are still available.
I've stayed at this place a few times. The cabins are nothing fancy, but the setting and location are ideal. No tent camping is allowed.
Rally-type camping
This place is near Sturgis and has some cabins with four bunks, a futon and bath for $75/night. The setting isn't as scenic, but it is near the Hills and good riding.
To be honest, I would love to just tent-camp. If most or all of the attendees feel the same, I could look into that option and I'm sure we'd have lots of nice choices.
Lodging availability is day-to-day. Please review and respond with preferences - I'd like to make some reservations soon if we have enough interest. _________________ tlp

At present we have Flying Duck and miKeinWIs planning to stay. Shoganai is a maybe. Scott_Anderson would stay with family and hopefully join us for riding.
If we act quickly, we could reserve the last campsite ($22/night) and camping cabin ($45/night) at Game Lodge Campground in Custer State Park on 21-22 July. The camping cabin sleeps four and two tents are allowed on the campsite. This would allow Flying Duck and Klinker to tent it, while miKeinWIs, Shoganai and one or two yet-unknown and uncommitted others could have the cabin. As a SD resident, I can make the reservations without a fee and we could split the cost when everyone arrives (just don't jilt me! ).

Sounds good. Best of both worlds.
Go for it. $45/nite is cheap at half the price.

I hesitated too long and the cabin has been reserved. There are probably other options to research, but I won't have the time to do so in the next 4-5 days. The Harney Camp Cabins may still be available, but I would like to explore cabin/tent camping at the same location. Feel free to search on your own or stay tuned... _________________ tlp

Hi,
I wish I could make it (I think I'm the only one who has been to HM, HD and HL), but I'm scheduled to be working in the mine on the proposed dates. So unless I get fired (always a possibility), I don't think I can make it. _________________ Ride Safe,
