Ok for the body guru's,
were these bike painted with a "base coat/clear coat" combination or just the primer coat/top coat.

I better clarify a little bit, I'm going to have some body work done in the future and wanted to have it repainted in the process without having to repaint the entire bike, just the bits that need it ---upper fairing, mirrors, side case lids. You know the stuff exposed to scratches and dings.

Glasurit is not your regular paint. I'm sure there are shops that can match the color, and even the metal flake if they're really good.

The paint is a base coat or coats, then a clear coat.

I gave them the paint code and they couldn't bring it up in the paint database system.
They then tried the optic reader to create it.
We did come up with a metalic mix recipe, just wasn't sure if it was the b/c type paint work or what I would call the old "traditional" paint type.

Might be worth a call to Holt's to see if they have a match, I believe they have all the BMW paint codes matched.

There are only a few places in the US that can apparently get Glasurit - Holt BMW and the Wark Shop (and I think the Wark Shop gets his from Holt) in Ohio, and some guy up in Vermont - can't remember who. If you get ON, they're all advertise there.

One problem with using factory paint codes (BMW or not) is if the original paint has faded.

I've had good luck with guys usingthe PPG paint computer.

Yea, I had thought about that issue as well.
I think for the minimum of paint that I would have to buy, I even thought about repainting the entire bike so it would all match.

I had the side cases and one mirror painted - and, yes, quantity was a problem - at least for the mirror.

I could not tell any difference between the factory paint and the repainted parts as far as color, brilliance or anything else. Fading wasn't a problem with my bike.

I bought some paint for my mirror project about a year ago. I went to the local Finishmaster paint store and they were able to cross-reference the BMW code and give me an accurate match.

I can't speak for the other colors, but the Mystic Red is actually a 2-color, plus clear coat process. You first must paint Black as a base, then the Red, then a clear coat. I failed to do the Black and, instead, painted directly over the replacement mirror's white primer. If you look closely at the picture, you can see where the original mirror has a black tinge to it and the new one is slightly off-color.

I used Dupont R-M paint. If you're interested, I can look up the exact Dupont paint code when I'm out at my workshop later today. A quart, btw, is probably enough to do every colored piece on my bike (bags, too) at least 6 times over! Yes, I'm a painting rookie!


(The one with the cracks is original. The other is my handiwork.)

Nice job! Did you spray that with a paint gun in a booth? Honestly, I can tell no difference between the two.

I discovered that Citroen Diablo is the same colour red as my K. Its a perfect match. I wonder how many other car manufacturers use the same paint as BMW motorcycles, despite the fact that my K was built in 1993!.

BMW Paint code 575 in a car is Green, in a motorcycle is Red?

No. I sprayed it farmer-style out in the wind in front of my workshop. Honestly, I held it in one hand with a pair of padded vice grips and sprayed with the other hand. I've got a fairly decent (~$100) Binks touch-up spray gun for stuff like this. I still need to buy a good gun for bigger parts.

Around here, the trick is to paint early in the morning in the summer before the wind comes up and while it's still nice and cool. I was really surprised how well it came out.

I color-sanded (wet-sanded) and spent a bit of time polishing to achieve the results in the picture. It doesn't match the rest of the paint on my bike very well because my new mirror has absolutely no orange peel while the rest of my bike definitely does.

I'm hoping to have a little paint booth set up in my basement at some point in the future. I'd like to paint all the Mystic Red parts of my bike. I'll need a decent ventilation system if I do it in the basement. I'll definitely cordon off one room and keep positive pressure on it to make sure the vapors don't migrate to the water heater pilot light. Boom.

I've had a couple of PM's concerning the paint I used for my Mystic Red mirror painting session. Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I figured this would keep everything together if someone uses the search function.

In any case, here's a picture of the can of Dupont R-M paint I had mixed up for me in the Mystic Red color. You'll also want the black underlayment color--which I don't have, but a paint shop should be able to help you with.

As I said earlier in this thread. It really should be a 3-layer process. 1. Black; 2. Mystic Red; 3. Clear. If you're basically incompetent (that'd be me!), you should probably add a 4th step... wet sand and polish out all the imperfections!
