Okay, I just need real-world experience-based answers for this one--
what speaker has the best fit (no modifications of the grills or fairing) and best performance (using the OEM radio) for the front of the LT?

Anyone done a garage hack to the OEM radio in order to install an Ipod cord?

Rick

I have blown every single speaker I put in the LT, but these were the best:

Regarding the Ipod the best thing you can do is get a standard cassette adapter at any Radio Shack, it is a direct fit and sounds perfect.

I just took the mounting plate to the store and got what would fit. My 97 K1100LT has a four inch speaker (mounting plate has 3.5 inch hole) stock is #65132325462 and BMW places want $130 each. Got instead a pair of Pioneer TS-G1042R (cost 50 for the pair). They look a lot like the stock, suposed to handle 120 watts, bolt right in. (And I have one spair.)

But I don't know how they might last, no miles on them yet.

Your smilage may differ.

Or a Belkin mini FM transmitter that plugs in to the ipod headphone jack. Then you can also use it in your car/truck as well as on the bike with the radio cover on. No cords.

Then you could put a subwoofer into the top box, loosen one screw in your rego plate so it vibrates with the doof doofs.....

I personally connect my ipod to my WirEvo bluetooth txmtr to my Camos helmet intercom system, or my Garmin 2820 mp3 by bluetooth to the Camos.

I hope they last a while. My stock ones have sounded really bad for quite a while so when you said they fit right in I ordered a set. I plan on putting them on a switch so I can turn them off when I want to use my helmet speakers. I kind of like the speakers on the open highway but I don't want to be the dick making everyone listen to my stuff while in town.

I am pretty happy with my audio setup at this time. Put in a pioneer CD player with AM/FM receiver. Also allows me to plug in and control my Ipod from the handlebar mounted wired remote. Plays regular CD's and MP3 data discs. Can also plug in a thumb drive via the USB. It is setup for XM but I have not subscribed. It all runs through my Starcom along with my cell phone, GPS and 2 way radio. Guess that's enough to keep me awake in 2010.

And I do like to listen to the radio as well.

Maybe I'm a bit buzzed just because I got things to work, and anything would be better than the busted speaker.

Actually, i had to work around the four mounting ears that pioneer used. They are not useful, but the old three-hole bracket slips over that and "bolts right on". (Nobody should be peeking behind the panel to see the other mounting stuff anyway.) (I fur sure didn't want to hack off the ears using a dremel! That would make steel grit that could get into the speaker!!)

When I read that, I thought, "huh?", then re-read it and pretty much got the gist of it.

Just think, twenty years ago, (heck, even when most of our bikes were built), none of those gadgets even existed, I wonder what the next twenty will bring....

Oh I dont know. Because I dont like wires sticking in my ears when I'm on a motorcycle? The stock radio with upgraded (4") speakers works fine for me. When it dies I'll drop in a better radio like some of the others have done but I cant warm up to earbuds.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy high quality music and my car does have XM and even DVD-Audio. But on a bike I doubt I could detect the quality difference.

Ya the BMW stock radio with the cassette adapter did a great job of pumping out the tunes from my IPOD or XM Satellite radio. It was plenty loud even with a full face on, but this is before I wore earplugs.

Well, I started this project 2 yrs ago. Almost complete, but I lost all my pics! Damn kids...

I had an extra rear trunk. Took off the lumbar pad, cut 14 1/4" slots horizontally. (why 14? better than 13!)

Inside the trunk I mounted a 150 watt amp and 2 6x9 Rockford Fosgate speakers, angled toward the front of the bike. Replaced the radio with XM ready/MP3 Pioneer.

Adjusted the fronts (4 inch Pioneers) to mostly Mid/High range. Balanced front and rear to about 30% and 70% respectively.

Outcome? Flippin fantastic! Even at highway speed (80 mph) I have beautiful sound AND even have bass!

Of course, 2 up is out of the question with this mod, so I still have my standard trunk with the normal speakers if I decide to allow my wife to ride!
