|
|
Bought the K1100LT about 6 weeks ago. Changed all the fluids at that time with a change of trans gear oil with Castrol Synthetic 90-140. Trans seems a little better at that time but over the next 500 miles, I have been experiencing a lot of "clunks" and false neutrals and a general stiff feeling.
Today I changed to Redline 75-90 Synthetic and added about 2 oz of MSO2. What a difference. Smooth as snot on a doorknob. We will see how time plays out but I feel a big difference.
Also noted a fair amount of "shavings" on the magnetic drain plug. Don't recall cleaning it last time but cleaned very good this time so I'll be watching at the next change to see how it looks _________________ Mike Holbrook

I've used both Spectro SPL 75W-90 and Redline 75W-90NS in my transmission with good results. _________________ Kenji

I have noticed my trans has gotten clunky after changing fluids this winter. I think I will pick up a bottle of synthetic and give it a go.
What is MSO2? I assume some type of additive but Google search has not been my friend.

Hi Jeff.....
MoS2 is molybdenumdisulfide a common black hyper-lubricant. You can buy it in most automotive shops or try a Honda dealer.. "Moly" reduces the friction at the gear surfaces and also builds a thin miniscus film at the sealing edge of the transmission input/output seals. Mix well with the intended gear-oil but DONT overdue it. I think a max of 2% to 3% by volume is more than sufficient. It disperses very well in a turbulent environment..ie: transmission or final drive. It will however clog an oil filter! When I worked in a test lab in Germany we often used moly to lubricate the seals so as to test the "sealed" component rather than the seals themselves... ie: shafts, gears, slider bushings, bearings, etc. Also good would be Tungsten Disulfide in the 2% range, but it is not readily available.
Have fun and ride safe!............// Ernie-NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

I have 1.5 micron moly in both my transmission and final drive. Not done scientifically but with an infred temp gun I found that after a few hundred miles my rear drive was running about 20 degrees cooler. From reading about it on some other forums if you use a smaller 1 micron size you can use it in the engine and it will go through the filter. _________________ Rich

Where would I be able to buy that? Any idea how to measure it, and how much to use? This would be for a K75RT _________________

Check with guard dog. They have additives as well as the GD525 for the splines. guarddogmolylubricants.com _________________ Doug

Hey Ted,
I have a pound of it. Let me know what the volume is in the k75 tranny and final drive. I will bring two vials down for you when we meet at HMIII. _________________ Rich

Hey Rich....
The problem with moly in the engine ( ie: oil filter clogging ) is that MoS2 tends to agglomerate regardless of initial particle size as the "crystal" is mechanically deformed, such as at and along the gear involutes. This means that you could have random and irregular moly structures traveling in the fluid stream and collecting at the filter. Some if not most will probably break apart and pass through BUT many will not. Same is true with WS2 ( tungsten disulfide ) Could be that nano-Borax is better than either but I know of no published study as yet even though Argonne Natl Lab has been developing a borax lubricant. WS2 in nano particle sizes is available at extreme cost BUT is readily airborne and therefore dangerous to handle.

Hey Rich - that would be excellent! K75RT takes 850cc in the trans and 260cc in the final drive.

Thanks Doug - Yes, everyone seems to love this stuff and I need to order some for the upcoming final drive spline lubes - any idea how much a rear spline lube takes and how much comes in the jar? _________________
