Last summer when I ran out of rear tire in Flagstaff, I wasn't able to find one anywhere within 3 or 4 states. I ended up overnighting one from Morton's BMW in Spotsylvania, VA. $160.00 for the tire, plus $160 shipping. The tire was four years old when I got it - certainly not worth what I paid for it, and definitely not worth the shipping - other than it got me back to VA.

This vid recommends not running a tire more than 6 years old: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

I've read a couple of articles recently in motorcycle mags that recommend not running a tire more than 5 years old.

Guess I'm getting another rear tire... Crying or Very sad BUT NOT FROM MORTON'S!!!

Have you talked to them about it? Anytime I had an issue with Morton's they made good with no hassles. I bought my RS from them and dealt with them for years. I am surprised to say the least.

Not a bike tire story, but my van...

Lost a wheel to a pothole a couple weeks ago, and put on the spare. I have only owned the van for a couple years, but it's an '85. So was the spare.

It lasted -maybe- 200 miles before it failed catestrophically in a parking lot. I shudder to think what would have happened on the open road. Tire tech told me he saw the "1985" DOT stamp on it and about fainted. Belts degrade with time, and running old rubber is not worth the risk.

btw, this was not a donut spare, but a full size new-looking tread regular tire. Just old.

Isn't it fact that you should buy the most expensive tires, the most expensive brake pads, and the least expensive everything else.

Ebay seller from Denver is selling Dunlop D220 in the K11 rear size for $39.95 plus shipping. The shipping was listed as $17 per tire but they bundle the shipping since I bought 4. The total shipping cost was $24. Laughing

The tires are date stamped 3406 which is within a reasonable age and if you burn through a tire or 2 a year this age is not an issue.

I bought 4 - 2 for me and 2 for my brother

$184 delivered to Texas.

Can't beat that with a stick.

i wish i could post pics from last year... at about 50 mph ... i had a new OLD front let go... nice center line split .. i bought it off ebay for about 65 dollars after the defaltion i noticed that the Metz was 5+ years old and this Z4 HAD known issues .. just remember the date must be stamped on the tire it will read 1204,, 3208 , 5110... the first 2 numbers are the week of manufacture and the 2nd are the year.. so 1204 is 12 week of 2004..
As for mortons... i would return the tire ask for credit towards a newer used tire ....
also u must consider how the tire has been stored a tire outside will deveolpe dry rt very quickly.. if stored in controlled enviroment the tire will keep for at least 2 years..

Chris,

How old were the Dunlop 404s?

I used Dunlop 491's and they are out of production.

I need to get tires myself this summer.

Anyone running bias on the front and radial on the rear? I have a Macadam 50 radial on the rear and looking at a Pilot 2 bias for the front. I've read numerous articles about not running bias/radial mixture, although a UK poster mentioned it's the best route to go??

Some of the BMW's leave the factory with a bias ply/radial mix.

BTW, before this I really liked PR2's on the street. But I had put a new pair on our son's Ducati last week and I took it to the track today. Now I am REALLY impressed. Very consistent, great traction when leaned WAY over- especially for tires that are not true sport rubber.

Not much of a chicken stripe left here after today.......
