I'm a K1100RS owner but need help with my project bike. I'm restoring a 1972 R75/5. I need torque specs for the differential. On the inside. I split the case to replace the gasket and have no idea how much to torque all the bolts down. My manual is burried in storage. - Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Rob

Confused

Good morning Rob...

RE: "" R75/5. I need torque specs for the differential. ""

Where on the bike are you talking about ? Are you talking about the Final Drive ?? All torque values are listed in the Clymer manual BUT are too high in many owners opinions. Let me know if I can do more to help you out.

best regards........// Ernie-NH

Rob,

Have you looked here: http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

It can take a few tries to get on the site properly, but you might find the manual there.

Otherwise, Ernie-NH, a member here might be of help- he has an airhead also. PM him if necessary.

Good luck.
John

ON EDIT- too late- he got here before me!

Have you joined the airheads e-mail list?

Ask this question there and you will have the answer in less time than it takes you to sneeze. Also some of the top BMW mechanics in the country are on the list and will dispense info for free!

Here is the address: http://www.airheads.org/

At least for K bikes, every Clymer torque value agrees with the manual from BMW.

Thanks guys for your responses.

Ernie, Yes, the final drive. The side that hooks up with the hub. All the nuts on the outer diameter. Like I said, my manual is buried in storage. Might try my local shop here, but.... (I'll leave it at that!)

Will also thry the airheads sight.

Thanks again for the input, keep it comin'!!

Rob

Hi Rob...

Did you change out any of the components ( ring gear, pinion gear, bearings or spacers ) ???? If so, you now have a major re-adjustment procedure to go through. If not and this was just an inspection and clean: then tighten the "cover mounting bolts" to 14 to 17 ft-lbs. The Final Drive to Swing Arm nuts you should tighten to 19 to 24 ft-lbs. However, tighten to a value less than indicated, then slack off a bit, and then come up to the recommended value. I would even be a bit shy of the recommendation since the unit is far from new. If you can, replace the Cover Mounting Bolts with new, and check to see that the threaded holes are not beginning to 'pull out'

IF you have replaced anything however, you MUST do a realign with specialty tools!!

Good luck and best regards.......// Ernie in NH

Hi again Rob...

John Clauss recommended that you join the Airhead list... you should in order to get the best advice as quickly as you need it ! But also because the Airhead community is unique in its scope and devotion to preserving these now aging machines. To join the list... go to micapeak.com and select airheads from the many lists. Once there you can subscribe and become a functioning ( contributing ) member. You will NEVER get better input into the preservation and proper maintenance of your R75.. Also, become a member of the Airhead Beemer Club ( ABC ) by going to Airheads.com and filling out the membership form online. Dues are $25 annually and you get a very informative monthly magazine outling events and opportunities in your area as well as nationally.

Best regards.......// Ernie-NH

Ernie,

Thanks for all the info. I broke down this past weekend and got the Clymer manual. MY GOD there's a ton of great stuff in that book!! I'm pretty sure I'm all set now, but will post if I need more help.

Thanks again,
Rob

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Rob...

Glad you're now in tune and prepared ! I meant also to mention that when you need parts, there is of course Bobs BMW in MD, Max Mororcycles, and Chicago BMW all of which are online. Also however, you can frequently do better trading with dedicated Airhead vendors such as Tom Cutter at RubberChickenRacing.com, or Tom Porter in Calf., or many others you will find in the Airmail monthly magazine. These guys also handel "K" related issues and problems, BUT for "K" stuff you should always go first to Flying Duck's site and ask, or to Beemer Boneyard, or any of the others you see mentioned here on the KOG forum.

Good luck and ride safe.....// Ernie in NH
