Someone on another K forum asked how to implement a side-stand bypass that would only let the bike run on the side-stand if the bike is in neutral. I came up with a way to do it using a relay and a diode.

To start with, leave the side-stand switch connected so it functions normally.

The bypass:

Wire a relay as follows:

85: Ground
86: Tap into Black/Green wire from instrument cluster to right combination switch
30: Tap into Green/Red wire from side-stand switch
87: Tap into Green/Yellow wire from side-stand switch

The Black/Green wire from the instrument cluster is the wire that powers the starter button if the bike is in neutral. Also note that there are two Black/Green wires going to the same spot on the connector for the right combination switch. The other one comes from the clutch switch which also powers the starter button if the clutch is pulled in. You'd need to figure out which is which somehow.

With just the relay, pulling the clutch in will also activate the relay so if you pull in the clutch (with the side-stand down), put it in gear and try to ride off then bike won't quit until the clutch is out. I suspect this could lead to a jerky experience (start moving then engine suddenly quits when the clutch is all of the way out) if you try to ride off with the side-stand down.

However, if you place a diode in the Black/Green wire between where you tap into it and the wiring harness connector for the right combination switch then that would keep the clutch switch from activating the relay. With the diode added, you'd pull in the clutch and the engine would quit the moment you put the bike in gear, thus avoiding the start and jerky stop scenario.

A side-benefit of this is that it would make it easy to diagnose if your side-stand switch is being flaky because the bike would still run if in neutral.

Even more idiot-proof than that is zip-tying the sidestand sensor tab closed. (easily viewable from under the bike)
Worked for 3 years for me. Razz

The "idiot-proof" aspect is making sure you can't ride off with the side-stand deployed.

I've done it twice since disabling. But I've done a lot of way dummer things during the same period.

On my RS I disabled the switch but wired it so that it makes the bulb monitor light go on to remind me, and I still manage to ride away with it down on occasion. I'm going to do this the next time I have the tank off.

At Flying Ducks suggestion I signed up with the K1100 Owners group.

I am the person F.D. is referring to on the other forum.

I am a long time rider and had 152,000 miles on my 91 K75 S I bought it new and modified the heck out of it pretty much it's whole life. I had mounted some K1100 wheels on it which required the K1100 centerstand to clear the rear tire. As the K75S had a mechanical sidestand retractor and the K1100 having a electronic system., I never took the time to figure out how to mix the two. For about eight years I rode the K75 S like that. I have several bikes including a heavily massaged K100-16 v and a F650 Dakar and I took to riding them mostly . One day after about a year and a half I re-registered the K75 S and rode it to a BMW rally in Vermont . On The way home it was very misty and my faceshield was covered in water droplets . I stopped and flipped down my sidestand , grabbed my faceshield cloth and wiped the shield clean. Quickly repacking , pulling on the gloves and restarting the bike, I turned onto Rte 100 So., a right hand turn. I rode for several miles until I encountered my first left turn. I leaned over and immediately the bike when into a jackpole kind of motion and I was thrown quite clear of the bike . I landed feet first in a cow pasture some 40 -50 feet from the road at over 40 mph . My left achilles was shredded and my right achilles took a major stretch but did not tear. Later I found that I had grazed a telephone pole with the jaw piece and side of my helmet while in the air.

I am telling you this because maybe I can save someones life or much pain and expense. I have heard many stories about people who were not as lucky as myself, and died since that happened.

So I thank Fried Duck for his expertise and willingness to help. Also thanks to the admins on theis site . Embarassed

That's why I'll leave my side stand cut-off in full idiot mode, thank you!

THINK!!! Do what is best for YOU!!!!!

Lot's of great stuff here & shared experiences.
My OLD bikes & my 81 R100RS never had any side stand cutoffs. I by pass'ed the switch on my 93 RS.
It's habit & training. I NEVER, repeat NEVER vary my routine when i swing my leg over.
It is the same EVERYTIME!! I check the controls, I check the signals, I flash the high beam, I check both stands are up and I BOUNCE the bike with the front brake on to feel it. I don't know WHY, I just do this.
It does not matter if it's the first time that day I'm getting on the bike or if I stopped to mail a letter. Same routine every freakin time. YES!! I have taken a lot WTF are you doing looks, I don't care.
We ALL change in life. With age, with experiece, some with the weather. First time I ever ride that bike & leave the side stand down the cut switch goes bye bye. If I survive that is.
Thanks for sharing that experience " veesquared" that's terrible what happend & glad you survived. No knock on you, that's some gruesome stuff tearing tendons & crashing.

Thanks , I broke my routine by not getting off the bike after I deployed the sidestand. Something I've never done before .

I blame no one but myself and believe me I have posted this same story many tmes before. I have seen many replies . " to each his own, " was one that made me realise that some folks are just in denial. That's okay .
My only hope is just to make people think of the possible consequences of disabling their sidestand safety device . Best of luck to you . Have a great riding season.

Love the routine, JP. I will aspire to develop that habit. Do you play golf?

IIRC, the bikes I owned back in the late 70's & early 80's had a factory installed piece of rubber that was attached to the lower portion of the sidestand, parallel to the leg and protruding an inch or so past the bottom of the SS.

If you went into a corner with the stand still deployed, the rubber would hit the pavement first and cause it to retract- without a rigid polevault like veesquared experienced (ouch!)

Given the $#@^%$!@!!! problems that the faulty SS switch caused and considering the very few times I use the SS, I am inclined to recreate that very simple auto-retraction device on my RS.

For " Saltcreek" I do play golf, often badly. Adopting a routine brought me from over a 110 to low 90's. It was especially helpful gaining confidence to drive the ball well. Still sucky but I have fun. When you think about it, that's really only one stroke per hole more than the pro's. Least ways that's what I keep telling myself.

Sugerhill - You have a rubber on your sidestand? Like the old Honda's do? That makes sense. Do what works for you, it's the best thing.

The KISS system is often best for me.

Life is all complicated enough on it's own.

I'm still mystified why the kill switch doesn't stop the starter motor from being turned over but the SS does!

I get around the golf course in about 90, but the second 9 is usually worse....

I think the best were the ones installed on the 8V K100's.

A mechanical interconnect hooked to the clutch release that retracted the sidestand when the clutch lever is pulled and the sidestand is unloaded. Of course you could not pull in the clutch with the bike on the sidestand- or you might break something if you were determined enough. It can be retrofitted to a K11 if the stock exhaust (with the chamber on the side) is not used.

The only problem with those was that if you were away from your bike and somebody sat on it and pulled in the clutch.... It's happened to a fair share of people who came back to their bikes to find them lying on their side or back up but with the left side damaged.

And if you used it often enough it would stretch/wear out the clutch cable.

Edit: And I remember a few times at gas stations and such where I'd pull the clutch and forget - and then star to get off. Fortunately never went over but got close a few times.

Sidestands are real pain; most won't hold up your better (worse?)'s half weight.

I really miss my Reynolds Ride Off Stand on my old R100/7. Too bad nobody has designed something similar for the Top Heavy K's.

I usually use the center stand as a "core" exercise (Hernia inducing routine). Wink
