|
|
Good morning all....
Has anyone had experience or difficulties with the "seat latch" on our K1100 ( LT or otherwise).. simply cannot get mine to latch even when I "free hand" it by removing the latch bolt from the seat proper. Is there a secret or do I have to disassemble the latch mechanism.... perhaps replace the latch mechanism.... or simply forget it ! (???)
best regards all............// Ernie-NH
PS: Hey.. while we're at it, what is the secret to getting this beast up onto the centerstand ? It seems the assist handle on the K1100LT is ergonomically in the wrong place to get any good balance or leverage ? _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

You may need to "let out" the adjustment screw. (make it longer)
on the center stand, Lift up and push down with your foot. If its in gear she won't want to move, so pull in the clutch. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

1: The hook in the seat lock is probably broken off.
2:
Put the bike in neutral. Otherwise the rear wheel is locked and provides resistance to getting the bike to initially back up when starting to put the bike on the center stand.
Point the front wheel straight ahead.
With the left hand on the left handlebar, pull out the handle and grab it with your right hand.
Put your right foot on the center stand, push it down to the ground and keep some pressure on it.
Rotate the bike towards vertical until the right centerstand foot contacts the ground.
Mostly using downward pressure with your right foot on the center stand but pulling slightly up and back with your right hand, put the bike on the centerstand. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

My bike was extremely hard to centerstand until I got new tires. The slight difference in ground clearance made a huge difference. It also helps me to rock the bike slightly side to side until I feel both sides of the stand are touching the floor. _________________ Jim

just want to reiterate the fact that it is much easier to do once both sides of the center stand are touching the ground. i originally tried to do it without rotating the bike to vertical and only pushing from the left side. not only was that ridiculously tough, it would have likely spilled the bike onto me. i had to hit up a how-to on the bmwmoa site.
i never take it out of gear though ... _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

If you have a lowered rear shock or if the front springs and weak it is hard to get on the center stand. I had my bike lowered with a low rear shock and lowered the front. I need to get my center stand cut down but then it will not sit right in the up position. In the mean time I just muscle it up on the center stand.

Hi Duck...
Re: Question #1... I think you're right, its internal. I'll have it off tomorrow and apart. will let you know... I think the thing is just broken.
Re: Getting bike on Centerstand.... Thanks everyone for the tips. Now I'll just have to go out and practice. I know its something I'm doing, or not doing properly..

Ernie, like you said, it will just take practice.
I had a yamaha virago before the LT. It also had a center stand. I couldn't get it on stand to save my a......
I tried all kinds of things to try and get it up on the cs. I tried rolling the bike up onto a 2x4 for more ground clearance.
It wasn't until I got the LT and learned the "proper" way to push down with your foot, roll rearward, lift with the handle, all at the same time.
Place the bike in neut or pull clutch while rolling.
Once I got the right idea how to do it with the LT, putting the yamaha up on center was a breeze, no more 2x4 needed. _________________ Ride safe.

Ernie, the centre stand thing drove me mad for ages when I got the LT.
I can do it now fairly easily and (as others have said) it's certainly to do with getting that right hand side part of the stand to make contact with the ground before you apply any pressure anywhere. At the risk of repeating what others have advise: (I keep mine in gear and pull in the clutch), grip the handle, press down on the center stand until you feel the ground then rock the bike gently (laterally) until you're sure both feet are in contact then:
press down with foot, pull slightly back with left hand and pull slightly up with right hand!
Now the problem I have is getting it off the cs if it's on an upward incline! I've never dared push it off from the side... but that's another story _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Good morning all...
OK... Thanks to you guys and the "centerstand" tips, I have been practicing in a parking lot and can now manage to get it up on the stand nearly every time... As all of you know, it was getting the stand firmly on the ground such that it was secure from falling to the opposite side, as well as being sure that the rear wheel could roll, that has been the secret for me at least. The "K" is no heavier than other bikes I own, but I think its CG is perhaps a bit higher which gave me the "feeling" that it was either going to fall away or toward me... At any rate, THANKS for all the advice and now I feel quite confident that I can get it on the CS when I need to !
very best regards all, hope its a nice Sunday wherever you are !

It's a whole heap easier, if you happen to be 6'4", built like a brick sh**house and weigh (a rather deceptive) 20st (280lb, for my American bretheren). _________________ Fr Jack

Mine was broken (hello J-B-Weld). Looks like the slack in the latch causes the hook to grind back and forth on the latch-rod. Looks like maybe a half inch (10mm) slack when latched. Shouldn't this be firmer? _________________ RIP (Roy Parker)

Well with the battery installed, some of the slack is taken up.. Seems that the seat presses down on the Motronic box(?). Should this be so?
Got it running, got the radio to work, set the clock, warmed it up, and put 0.1 mile on it in the driveway(first tenth for the year!). It's too slick to get onto the roads just yet. _________________ RIP (Roy Parker)

Do you have the right battery? Or the wrong seat? _________________ Jim

shouldn't be making contact with the Motronix or anything else.. The latch is adjustable for length but in my experience never seats very well. The Corbin fits much better making a healthy, firm 'click' on closure.
Sounds as if something's not assembled properly... _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Hi guys...
Hey I meant to respond to this some time ago and just got too busy... re my "seat latch" problem... Duck hit it square on the head,, my latch internal was/is broken and I will have to replace it. The internal latch key has a small tang to catch the seat bolt groove and if this is not there ( ie: someone trying to force the latch or slamming the seat ) it simply cannot function..
On the other issue: Cant see how the seat can hit the Motronic IF you have the correct seat and the correct battery (height of battery can be no more than 6 1/8 " ) If the battery is too high the Motronic seat ( ie: battery hold down plate ) cannot sit low enough. Check your battery height !

I was wrong, it's pressing on the motronic connector, not the box.
Seat is BMW (stock as far as I know.)
Battery 6 3/4 inch (BMW gel-cell is 1/16" taller at 6 13/16").
Checked and found nothing under the battery, no lost tools or whatever. No wires or tubing under the battery.
And all this time I was feeling so good getting it running. (Need state vehicle inspection & license.) _________________ RIP (Roy Parker)

Roy, check the bottom of the seat pan for rubber bumpers. The seat should actually set on these rubbers on the frame rails, and 2 up front that will set on the fuel tank.
I'm wondering if you may be missing some of these supports. _________________ Ride safe.
