Hi...My 93 K1100RS developed a high pitch loud noise coming from the fuel pump. It's about ten times louder then the noise it makes when is low on fuel. The noise starts about one minute after the engine is running.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yep, pretty common, check your fuel filter and replace if it's a been awhile. These fuel pumps don't like to be run on empty or with a clogged filter. Also the "sock" at the intake can get fouled up as well, restricting the fuel coming in, see if it's intact. _________________ Steve

Hi, R1200HACK,
Remember, the fuel pumps are NOT cheap! I just had to replace the pump in my '95 K75RT (just sold). The pump was the later, smaller pump (43mm diameter) used from build date 12/92. The list was $328 for just the pump and $370 for the pump, mount, damper and screen. The price from Chicago BMW was $296. My old screen was split wide open. If you need a screen (only), it is nearly $40 for the newer pump style.
If you need a fuel filter, BMW will be glad to sell you one for something over $30. I buy mine at Auto Zone. They are Luber-filter number ff3424 and the cost (last one I bought a couple of years ago) was a little over $2. _________________ Ride Safe,

Those ff3432 filters are plastic now. (At least at Autozone where I get them.) Not sure if I'd trust one in a pressurixed fuel injected system. I've switched over to the NAPA 3032 which is metal and designed for an FI system. About $7. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I also had a noisy fuel pump which turned out to be loose hose connections on the filter and pump just as Brian Curry and Tom Cutter had suggested.
The noise was audible with ear plugs at 40 mph. _________________ 1996 K1100RS, 1976 CB750A, 2017 Triumph Trophy, 2020 R1250RT, 2022 RE Classic 350 |
