Does it matter what the fuel filter looks like to replace the original as long as the inlet and outlet and the filter is the approximate size? I found a metal Bosch fuel filter however the numbers are 33xx ( four numbers), not the 7xxxxx listed in these posts.

I once put a NAPA filter in mine in the middle of New Mexico because it looked about right when compared to the stocker. Worked fine for many miles. If the flow is enough, usually the size of the inlet/outlet, it should work fine. A smaller filter might clog sooner with less filter area.

Just make sure that you get a filter that can handle the pressure of the fuel system and can handle being imersed in gas.

Others may know what the acutal pressure runs but I think it's in the neighborhood of 35-45 psi.

I think originally BMW said the filter needed to be changed at 12k miles, but then discovered this was way too conservative, and externded the change interval to 24k miles.

The regulated fuel pressure is 35-40 psi., deadhead pressure is over100 psi. If the pressure regulator fails the NAPA filter can burst, as it is made for use with a 6-10 psi system. I too felt the pain of 34.00 for the BMW filter, but it is made for the bike. The cheapest thing on a motorcycle is the owner.
