New to the group ... and I have an 85 K100RS question, although I believe the parts are the same through the 1100 range.

I am going to dig in and replace my weeping rear main seal. I have been as far as the splines in the past, but have not removed my clutch.

So I have read about and seen photos of the clutch alignment tool. Can I align the clutch pack without the tool?? Can I lightly bolt it together .. slide on the tranny ... then remove and torque to spec??

Somewhere .. I think I read on the web that as long as you get the tranny on .. it will align itself as soon as you pull in the clutch the first time ... True???

Thanks

Yes, done it MANY times. Feel around the edges with your fingers to line it up initially. Only tighten the six bolts(the first time) so there's enough friction to hold it in place. Don't lube the splines until the second time. Otherwise you'll puch the lube throug hand it can spin off onto the clutch plate.

Not really. If you can get the tranny on then it's already aligned.

I found that the clutch push rod neatly fitted into the centre of a 3/8 drive socket, the outer size was chosen to be as close as possible to the clutch spline diameter. Then I wrapped electrical tape around the outside until it was a snug fit. The driven plate centralised nicely & the box slid in first time. Tip, put the box in gear, makes spinning the shaft easy to locate it into the plate.
