Ok, so I am installing the fuel pump on the k100. I shake the bike a little and I have coolant come out the weep hole at the bottomof the water/oil pump. Does this mean I need to do a rebuild or replace the water/oil pump and does anyone have a good write up on this or is Clymers or Haynes good enough.

Thanks for the help.

rebuild - and if any of the replacement parts have been redesigned, make sure you change everything in there. You may not have the same issue with the 100 that I had with the 1100.

Hi, Rich,
yes and no. I have seen a few drops of oil from the weep hole on my K75RT. In fact, I saw them before the ride to HMII. For the two or three weeks before HMII I checked and saw no drops, so I rode the bike without changing seals. I was going to have Bentonville BMW do the work if I saw drops at Branson, but none appeared. So far, no further drops have appeared. I would run the K100 for a week or two and see if the drops still appear. If not, fine, keep an eye on it. If so, plan on replacing the pump. An '85 pump has a lot of issues - seals, impeller, shaft, nut vs bolt, etc, and a new pump is probably cost-effective instead of replacing all the necessary parts.

Hey Phil,

this was more than a few drops but it was the first time I saw it. Also there was no oil only coolant that came out.

Do you happen to know what other year pumps will fit the 85 K100?

Thanks,

Hi, Rich,
I "think" they will all fit. The early pumps ('85 until a certain build date) had a nut instead of a bolt holding the impeller (I think). This nut was replaced with a bolt because the nut had a tendency to unscrew and break through the front housing. This is why, to rebuild your pump, I think you need seals, impeller, shaft, spacer, and God knows what else. That's why, in your case, a new pump would probably be cost-effective.

I just checked Max's fiches, and the same pump number is used for K100, K75, and K1200LT, but surprisingly, it's different from the K1100 and K1. Max's list is $444.38; BMW of Lynchburg is $425.53. Chicago BMW would be $355.50, although I placed an order with them on 28 Aug, thinking it would arrive before I left for HL. It hadn't shipped the Tuesday before I left (9/15). so I told them not to ship until I advise them. They're very slow; I hope they follow instructions.

Hi, Scott,
A few hundred more miles is NOTHING for retarded, er, retired folks. HOWEVER, I have already made plans to visit friends and family in Raleigh, NC, Macon, GA and Dallas, TX on my way home. Now, I know it's NOTHING to ride from Macon, GA to Dallas, TX via Chicago, BUT I have to be home by 10/15. And, although I do some long distance riding, my return home is NOT the Iron Butt and Chicago BMW is not a bonus stop, so I'll call them about the time I leave Macon and have them ship. Besides, shipping is only about $10. My gas would cost more than that and I'd have to pay sales tax!

Picked up a water pump with the upgraded gears and impellar from Fred Rowland Cycles Recycled for $100. I'll install it and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the info.
