Hi All,

My 95 k1100LT screen is (as most seem to be when initially purchased) not working. Im not even getting the 'click' of the motor when pressing teh button.
I havent started to look at it properly yet (as im trying to concentrate on the backfiring problem at mo - see prev post!) but did i read somewhere that the motor is the same as that used on a peugot car? do you guys have any tips/hints for things i should look out for when trying to sort it out.

Welcome to the forum Rich! Others will come along soon with questions for you and help solving your issues. I'll just say that the windscreen is fairly easy to remove to diagnose. I'd remove the four screws holding the actual screen on first and put it somewhere safe. Then six or eight more screws and the mechanism is out and unplugs. There are two small drain hoses that can come with it or stay in the fairing. Ge a good look at the fairing bracket where it bolts to the frame while you're in there.

Just had screen off, I can see that the motor is turning but no screen movement - all looks clean, no corrosion etc so not sure what to do now - any ideas as to what could be wrong? how does the motor actually move the screen?

You need to get into the internals. Take off the front portion and the rear speaker plastic.

I have the mechanism out and unplugged. Like I say the motor is turning as I can see the little green plate on the back moving when I press on the switch - just no screen movement. Guess its the relays?

If I remember right, part 8 is a flexible drive driven by gears on the motor housing. Stripped gears or bad flex drive seems likely.

Rich - if the motor is turning, it's not the relays - you'll have to look into the mechanical drive parts.

On my '95 the tubes of #8 were dirty enough that the cables of #7 would drag and caused the final drive gear of #1(the motor assy) to strip & slip.
I had to buy another old motor assy to get the gear as it's not available by itself.

I replaced the gear and cleand the tubes and sliders real good, now it works fine.

You might get lucky enough to be able to clean the tubes and such and make it work, otherwise start looking for a motor assy as well.

Hey Scott,

Can you please go into a little more detail on the procedure to clean the cables/sliders? Do you need to lube them too? If so, with what?
I think mine may be in need of service. The screen doesn't like to raise at highway speeds. It also seems to have slipped a bit on one side. The right is a tiny bit higher than the left when it's almost at the lowest position - just off the 'rests'.
Thanks.

Use silicone lubricant (annually.) It's not as prone to trapping dust and gunking stuff up as other lubricants can do.

If you read the owners manual, you're not supposed to raise the screen at highway speeds. (But you can assist it with a free hand to reduce stress on the gears/motor.)

Thanks, Drake.
Do you just use a spray degreaser to clean it up? Is there much disassembly required?

I've never had to mess with mine. My LT only had 14k on it when I got it and every time I pull the dash apart or the screen off I give the rods a dose of silicone lubricant so I've never had any problems.

I've run both +4 Parabellum and +3.5 Cee Bailey's screens on mine so I always give it an assist with a free hand as I don't think the motor/gears are designed for that much of a load. (And I rarely play with my windscreen anyhow.)

Thanks again, Drake.
This is my second LT. My first gave no complaints when I raised the screen at speed. This one is obviously not liking it. I use a stock sized aftermarket screen that is a bit lighter than the BMW one.
Guess it's time to get my hands dirty and practise up on my swear words again.

I just got through repairing mine.

It sat outside for 2 years.

With it removed from the bike, remove the windshield, prop the housing up.

I used a light machine oil I use with my work, it doesn't dry out nor attract dirt.

Be patient, soak the cables with many drops overnight, on the way to work in the morning, do it again, maybe the next night too...

You get the point, it will free up. I also had problems with the metal sliders too.

Mine can be raised or lowered at speed. Of corse I'm not going "Mach 2 with my hair on fire" when I do it.

Don - I clean the sliders every spring - then lube them with DuPont Teflon http://www2.dupont.com/Products_and_Services/en_AU/products/safety_protection/teflon_lubs.html - second from left - the little blue bottle.

The teflon lube sets up dry - doesn't seem to attract dirt - it's very slippery stuff.

I use the shield depending on weather and whatever - at any speed. It's worked fine for the last 8 years.

Mine was doing this when I bought it and it was a cracked arm, #12 I think, that was wrong. It would still work, but unevenly.

I think it's amazing this system works as well as it does given the complexity and flimsiness of the moving parts and the stress generated by constant 70+ winds. A taller screen obviously aggravates the situation.

Taken it all apart this evening, motor is fine, it's the cables.

Have managed to lube up and loosen one side with lots of duck oil - now works quite nicely
The other is stuck solid. There is a little corrosion on the outside of the slider so maybe water has got into the cable outer and sat at the lowest point in the 'u' piece. Added lots of lube and tried tapping the mechanism with a rubber mallet etc to try and free up but locked solid up and down.

Have put the whole thing in a bucket of diesel in an attempt to loosen up and will try again tomorrow evening - ill keep you posted!

Please feel free to offer more advice as I have got to get this damn thing moving, I cant see a thing through the screen when it rains!

Rich,
I don't know if it's available in the UK, but if you can find some PB Blaster http://blasterchemical.com/display.cfm?p=50003&pid=4 you will be tickety-boo in no time!!
If you have one of those gawd-forsaken walmart stores near you, you might check there.

ta bill, no wallmart in sunny somerset uk mate...although there is one in bristol. Like I said its in diesel at mo, will keep going with the oil and gentle force tactic I guess. Does anyone happen to know how much a new mechanism is likely to set me back (here in the uk) and where I might get one if required?
