So how the heck do I get the spark plug caps off?
I tried grabbing them with a pair of pliers, like the Clymer manual says. But they slip off.
Any body got any ideas? _________________ '04 WR450f

With any luck, your local auto parts store will have a brake tool - hopefully with a T handle and a hook or 90ยบ at the other end. Put the hook in the hole and pull - carefully. If the cap lets loose and you're pulling for all you're worth, the spark plug wire will come apart as you fly backward. DAMHIK.... _________________ Jim

Use some medium Vise-Grips. Get them all of the way down the tab and yank hard while wiggling a little. (I can do it with just a set of regular pliers but I've got some practice at this.)
Getting them back on is almost as fun.
And be careful not to tip the bike over in the process.
On the + side you know they won't ever come loose. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Chris - make sure you use some silicone grease on them. You can use a socket and rubber or wooden mallet to tap them back on. _________________ Jim

So I hooked the cap with a brake spring tool. That worked, it pooped right off.
Thanks for the suggestions.
But now I have another problem!! None of my spark plug wrenches would reach in and grab the plug! What the heck is that all about?
I even tried the thin wrench for my dirt bike. It seems as though the wrench is being stopped by the head material surrounding the plug.
I checked the receipt from the PO and the plugs that are in there should be the Bosch X5's.
Any suggestions? _________________ '04 WR450f

Chris - don't you have a BMW tool roll/kit in the tail cowl? If you do, there should be a plug wrench in there that fits. _________________ Jim

Duh....I didn't even think of that. I do have the factory tool roll, I'll try it.
Thanks. _________________ '04 WR450f

Hi, Chris,
Most plugs which fit the K-bikes take an 18mm plug wrench. If someone has used Champions, I believe those are 5/8", but Bosch, NGK, Autolite, etc. use the 18mm wrench. _________________ Ride Safe,
