Hi All,
Doing the Hi/Lo beam relay upgrade.
Saw a dual relay at NAPA (#AR266) on the IBMWR tech list which would be nice instead of 2 seperate ones since you only one power hook up. Well...went to NAPA and ya, they have them - $54!! No way.
However, they did have a relay with 2 power in taps (87 & 87A)
Any reason I can't feed the main power to load side (#30) and run hi on 87a and lo on 87?? The switch tap would only be activated when the Lo or Hi beam fed juice to it.
It is backwards from intended but would there be any the problem with that?

If you use a five pin relay (85, 86, 87, 87a, 30) then you'll still need two relays. The five pin and then another relay to switch the power to 30 on and off. Otherwise your headlight will ALWAYS be on. Always as in when you turn the bike off and walk away with the key.

So in the end you're better off going with two relays, one for each beam.

If you mail me a $10 bill I'll mail you a couple of the small BMW relays. (That's what I use for headlight relays.)

I think the single relay would be nice to help save space. I personally like the idea of having separate relays though. Kind of the redundant systems idea. If one relay burns out you have the other to get you home. Drakes' small relays sound like the best of both worlds.

I don't know what the rating is on those relays (I'd guess 20A) but I do know for a fact that they'll handle up to 100W because that's what my high beam is. (And 90W on the low beam.)

Upon further review I figured there would be a problem. It was $5 so some day I might find an application.
Thanks for the relay offer but I do have 4 30 amp relays--just thought I could cut down on the numer but will just go with the old way.

As an aside, I have been interested in Catz lites after seeing an ad at least 10 yrs ago. They will probly be an upgrade in the near future.

I do have an audiovox cruise control on the way so will have more questions--even after your excellent write up.

Top three mods (they're all mandatory in my book so I won't proiritize them)

- Headlight Relays

(I'd throw in heated grips but they came stock on our bikes)

Beginning of June there was a raft of refurbished Garmin 2720's for $140.
I of course didn't start looking until they were all sold out. Most reports said they were brand new--had been returned by dealers after fancier ones came out. So I'm still reading maps and looking and looking for deals.

Drake-I don't think you have clutch hand lever on your sight. Mine is curved in from PO drop. Can live with it for a while but is there an alternative? Do you have a source? I realize it won't be a $8 Honda item.

We bought 2 of the refurbished 2720s I already had one from 2 years ago and love it so I got one for my wife and son. If these were refurbished I cant tell. Look and work like new. Also came with full warrentee
