|
|
Got around to changing the oil on the K1100 (1996).
The pan drain plug has been leaking a little for some time. When I removed the plug it had two crush washers on it. A small, thin aluminum washer, then another larger copper washer.
The larger washer was a loose fit on the drain plug (didn't fit right), the smaller aluminum crush washer fit OK. Both washers are distorted and "crushed" so are unusable. I would guess it was not replaced the last oil change. (Not supposed to re-use them IMO.)
In looking at the drain plug, it is tapered near head (above the threads) of it. Looks almost like it is supposed to have a "O" ring.
Does it take a crush washer or an "O" ring?
Thanks,

Hi, Larry,
The drain pluh is supposed to take one gasket, crush ring, whatever you want to call it. Originally BMW supplied crush rings, then went to aluminum gaskets, The oil drain plug and the gearbox fill plug take the same gasket. The gearbox drain plug, final drive fill and drain plugs take the same gasket (different from the other gasket). _________________ Ride Safe,

And some of the 1100's use the same "gasket" crush ring as the F.D. fill plug for the upper fork fill plugs as well.
Regardless of what the parts fich lists for the part #. So be carefull, verify the size, before ordering.

Opened the box with the BMW oil filter and "viola" the crush washer was in the box with a new filter cover "O" ring. Not sure what bozo used the old crush washer and added a second larger one. Duhhh...
No sign of a leak now, but I'll let her set a bit before I put the belly pan back on.
Thanks for the input guys.
