I know some of you have had this challenge.
'91 K100RS 16V
Bike just turned 91K

Last weekend on Hwy 5 south (central CA) 80 MPH my tach raced to redline, maybe over as I lost speed.

What I know: lost all oil trom tranny out weep hole.
Audible "Clunk" near front of drive shaft.;

Bike can start, but won't engage.

I plan to R&R the trans & DS with a used one from BeemerBoneyard,

I don't have it apart yet.

Motor oil is brand new and level is "OK"

BTW: Anyone who does not have towing insurance (like me) is playing with fire. Cost me $500. to get home-275mi.

Any trips?
Thanks

Progressive has good rates (especially if you have multiple bikes) and $5/bike for towing.

Try Joshua Buck at the Parts Haus in Long Beach for parts. mailto:jtbuck58ATaol.com Tell him Drake sent you.

Yowsa! Dat's a lotta ching.
No " U-Hauls" around there?

Are you a BMW MOA member ?

I mean, may not have been as clean and easy, but there has to be a better way.

Only hold basic memberships in AMA and MOA.

Got out the annonamous directory.
Yes I called about 5 peoples answering machines @ 2pm on a Friday. I was 100 mi. north of Bakersfield 20 miles south of Coalinga. 95F out.
I knew chances of someone picking up were slim.

I was proud of myself.. remained calm no jumping up and down and swearing. Just hiked up the burm and got away from the bike and looked at in shock as the HD riders waved at me. Was amazed I had cell service.

Spoke to the MOA office, learned i was SOL with basic membership.
Same with AAA "Plus" membership with no M/cycle add on.

Flatbed to Coalinga U-haul (20 miles): $250. Driver insisted he was cutting me a great deal.
($300/hr rate)

U-Haul- $190. + $80. fuel . (250 mikes one way)

A bit scary loading it solo. Particularly 'cause broken shaft/U joint made reverse a challenge
first had to drive to local K-Mart to buy a set of tie-downs. ($40.)
I was lucky to get it home upright in the state I was in. tired . hungry and a bit dehydrated. Now that would have been bad.

Logged 40ver 45K on this Classic K. Death valley (3X) / Colorado (TOR Ralley- excellent) to Bamnff B.C. and Glacier. I have been very lucky and tried to count my blessings in the 2+ hrs on the side of the road. Smile

Tried to amertize this expence over those miles and great times.

Reality is setting in and it is a bit deplessing. But once I start making some progress, I'll fell better.

Odd that you lost the fluid from the transmission, when my u-joint broke, the damage was limited to the drive shaft, the tranny was OK.

What would cause that?

I think 5 bills is a drop in the bucket to what its going to cost to repair that sucker. Shocked

In any case, glad you are ok. Could have been much much worse.

Should be about $300-350 for a used tranny and $150 for a used drive shaft.

That's weird the it barfed up the oil out of the breather vent. There must have been some major entropy occurring in your tranny.

Still need to do autopsy, oil spewed out of the "weep hole" on bottom of bell housing. That says seal in front of tranny is topast to me. Engone Oill seems OK. I am guessing U jopint flailed about and damaged tranny.

Bike was runing SO sweet too. Fresh plugs & filters + fluifs.

Mibil 1 in gear box and rear.... Drake Thanks for the lead on parts.

I'll let you know how it works out. Setting my sights on BeemerBash (Quincy) in Sept.

Consider yourself somewhat lucky. My K75RT stripped it's input splines in Bumfuck, Minnesota. Fortunately I had cousin and his wife who drove three+ hours each way in his truck from Minneapolis to rescue me and then let me leave the bike in his garage for a couple of months while I figured out how to get it back home. (Bought a Harbor Freight $200 trailer and retireved it.)

Dead K75RT:

Rescue team:

The retrieval. This was before I knew how to trailer properly so I trailered it home on the center stand. Embarassed

OIL ON THE REAR TIRE Shocked Shocked Shocked

Back 30 years ago had a tire oiling incident during an amateur 6 hour enduro road race. Changed the color of my underwear in seconds. Managed to stay upright- don't know how.

Good to hear that YOU are OK even if the bike is not.

Good luck with the repairs.

John
