Hello All,
I thought I joined last fall, but I can't find where I ever posted anything. I purchased a 1996 K1100LT with ~20,500 miles on it last September. It's got more garage-rash than I'd like, but it's in fantastic, mostly-stock condition. I think the seat is aftermarket, but I don't know what brand.
I've been lurking and reading up on the suggested care and feeding of my new toy. You folks are a very helpful crowd and I appreciate the free exchange of knowldege. My first motorcycle was a Z50 when I was in 1st grade. My family owned a Honda dealership for a time so I owned a bunch of Hondas--from the Z50 up to and including a Goldwing.
After I sold the Goldwing in 1989, I went for about 9 years without a motorcycle and then bought a 1998 Honda Shadow American Classic Edition (a Harley-looking knockoff). It was underpowered and uncomfortable for more than city cruising. I sold it after a couple of years and went until last fall without a motorcycle.
I didn't know how much I'd enjoy riding since I'm significantly older and my life has changed so much since I last owned a street bike. As it turns out, I really love it and am constantly looking for excuses to ride. I frequently take the [really] long route home just to have an excuse to go for a ride in the mountains.
In any case, I've put about 1500 miles on it since I bought it and plan to add more miles this summer. Even during the Colorado winter, I managed to ride at least once each month. I split my driving time in the summer between the BMW motorcycle and a Miata convertible. The Miata is sort of like a motorcycle... just a bit more luggage space!
Here are a few pics taken just after a Friday afternoon wash job.

Yah owrstrich, I've kind a been wondering about that after reading about Milton's recent Colorado adventure.
I have to ask you about your Avatar picture... What caused you to make such a face. If it's what it appears to be, I'd suggest a little more fiber in your diet!

Your seat looks like a Corbin and your bike looks kinda like mine, only newer. Johnnie's avatar was taken after looking at his rear tire. Hope this straightens things out for you. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Hey Owrstrich-- I hope you didn't change your picture on my account. I was just poking fun at you! I recognize your new photo as coming from your recent trip photos. Looks like you guys had a great ride.
Mystic Red and the other mystic red guys... I really like the color, too.
The horizontal switch above my radio controls is a volume switch for the intercom. I had originally assumed it was a factory product, but now realize it must have been an add-on. I plugged in a friend's helmet and the mic portion of the intercom system doesn't seem to work. The audio side does, however.
I don't know if I'll end up taking all of that off or not. I'd like to have audio piped into my helmet, but I ride solo 100% of the time so I don't really have a need for an intercom. I suppose it would be nice to have cell phone capabiities, too, but the silence is nice sometimes.
I also bought an Audiovox cruise control that I'm planning to add to the bike. Problem is that I've also discovered it's the cruise control of choice to retrofit to Miatas. Hmm. Which toy needs a cruise control the most? Or should I just spend another $90 and buy another...
I'm thinking that all the fix-up projects will probably need to wait until next winter because I don't want to take the bike out of service for any length of time during the good riding season.
Thanks for the warm welcome. |

Back when I had the KLR, I could take the "long way" and hit 2 or 3 good dirt roads, and there were 2 great spots for catching air.
Life's too short to not enjoy every second as much as possible. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

Thanks for the nice comments.
I'd rather not say how much I paid for it because it may be for sale sooner rather than later. My employer is operating in bankruptcy. We received some ominous news yesterday concerning plans for emerging from bankruptcy.
The short story is that a career change within the next 6 months is a very real possibility for me. If that happens and it's not a smooth transition from one career to the next, I fear that several of my 'toys' will be up for sale...
Kind of a bummer, but it is what it is.
