its happened on my last 3 rear michelin pilot road 2 tires...
i assassinated all the previous photos... but here are the photos from april 09... had 8k on it if i remember right...
its hard to see here... took these yesterday... at 4k the right side is nicely rounded with deep tread... the left side is cupping and is down to the wear indicators in the tread...
the left side tread depth is half of the right side tread depth...
what you think...

I have seen this type of wear on the right (I live in Australia) side of the tyre caused by the road camber, course road surface and long straight runs in the outback.

j o,
Alastair may have a good point there.
From all the (GREAT) pictures you have posted here I can conclude a few things:
-you tend to ride lots of narrow back roads which will have a pronounced crown- placing more wear on the left side of your tire.
-those same back roads might tend to be a rougher surface than a superslab. Again possibly contributing to more wear.
-uh...(how do I say this diplomatically?).......your K is carrying a significant amount of weight.
and finally, you always have a feather-light touch on the throttle, right?
Have you ever heard of motorcycling's "dark side"? I have no experience there but many swear by it http://lifeisaroad.com/stories/2004/10/27/theDarkSide.html

This is probably way out there, but...
I work in the HVAC field and in relation to belts it is extremely important to make sure your pulleys are in alignment. I am thinking that with a motorcycle, it is just as important that the wheels be in alignment to the frame. Since we tend to ride to our POV, or our front tire, we might never know if our rear wheel is out of alignement. Remember how the mid 70's Chevy Nova's "doglegged" down the road? From behind you could see it plain as day, but while driving or riding in it you could not notice.
So, what I am getting at is it may be possible that when you are riding straight up, your rear wheel is actually tilted, imperceptibly, towards the left side, thereby prematurely wearing the left side of the tire.
This is the only thing I can think of as to why you do not have similar wear issues w/ the front.
It might come down to putting the bike up on a stand, leveling the frame to horizontal, and then putting a level to wheel to check the vertical. |

of course im easy on the throttle... i have supernatural motocontrol... your observations have been noted...
underscore...
once i got off the avons... the front tire wear has been perfect... evenly rounded... even wear from chicken strip to chicken strip... no signs of cupping... glorious front tire wear... glorious im telling you...

leaning slightly to the left or pointed slightly to the right could do it i guess... but what changed... nothing has changed... heres the thing... this motoheap has always run straight and true... i can ride with no hands at any speed... no sensation of rear off tracking the front...
perhaps this saturday... if the fdk11og meets us for the chinook pass deal... he can ride behind us al take a close look see at the tracking...
more ideas please...

The tires you use are dual compound with soft rubber near the edges, harder down the center, I think. Road crown and surfaces as well as inflation could be big players.
You may want to try a single, harder compound rear. I remember you showing us that type of wear some time ago and I commented how you must be a devil on left hand corners. _________________ '93 K1100LT

I think this might be symptomatic of the bricks. Here is a link to my Pilot Road II's before I changed them this winter. Same wear except I didn't get to the cords, but they were getting pretty close.

Johnny, put your bike on the center stand, have some weight the front and see if you have any play in the wheel.
This could be FD bearings.

Check fork alignment...
Something is askew.

My take, (as a nOOb to this site) Many people turn better to the left ... with the weight bearing on your non throttle hand.
I say you are getting on the throttle earlier and more aggressively when you are turning left.
When you are turning right ... with your weight bearing on the throttle ... your not twisting as hard. |
