Friend K11ogers.
I'm planning for the next february a looong trip to Ushuaia, Argentina, with my faithfull K1100LT.
The total distance will be some 12k miles.
I'll ride in the most lonely and isolated places in South America, like the Atacama Desert and Patagonia region.
I wonder what I MUST carry with me in the future trip.
Example: Spark Plugs? Oil Filter Wrench? Extra Fuel Pump? Extra Fuel Filter? Etc....
Please, make you list of "Must Have" and post!
Will help a lot.

Do an oil change with good synthetic before you leave. I recommend Amsoil. It'll be good for the whole trip.

An air filter might be handy. But those are a bitch to change on the road.
Spark plugs can be cleaned. Change em out before you leave.

Bring some oil. You'll burn some. Mine would burn about 6 liters during that much time.

Bring a small air pump. Preferably powered off the cigarette lighter socket or the powerlet socket. A plug kit, the rope kind, not those worthless mushrooms.

You may need new tires before you get home. Where can you get that done? Order them ahead of time. Ensure they're there before you leave. The K1100LT has a rare size tire.

Spare headlight bulb and other major bulbs (brake light, tail light, turn signals).

That'll get you started.

Guilherme - if you start with new plugs - especially if you can get NGK irridium - you won't need plugs. Same with the fuel filter - if you start with a new one (easy to change) you shouldn't need another (assuming decent petrol). If the quality of the petrol is uncertain, take a filter - they're small and light.

You might want to have tires waiting for you somewhere about the 8,000 mile mark.

Maybe take an oil filter - and if you have it, the wrench - change the oil at the halfway point and call it good.

Spare bulb kit, fuses, clutch cable. Generally anything you can't easily buy along the way. You're not going alone, are you?

That's just for starters. I think Gwen posted a list of stuff awhile back. Ted has a link to his list on the front page of the K11 site (I think). Others will chime in with stuff they won't leave home without.

Hi, Guilherme,
Thet sounds like a memorable trip. I wish I could join you! That said, here's what I would want to take with me.
1. BMW tool kit
2. long screwdriver (easier to change fuel filter )
3. latex or nitrile gloves
4. fuel filter
5. clutch cable and extra nipple taped to the clutch cable
6. good tire plug kit
7. small air pump you can plug into the bike's electrical system
8. small roll of duct tape
9. selection of nuts, bolts, washers
10. oil filter and wrench ONLY if you plan to change oil on the trip
11. spark plugs - they're small and you already have the wrench
12. engine oil filler cap and "O" ring (Kids can be curious or malicious.)
13. headlight, taillight, brake light bulbs
14. small roll of wire
15. light - either flashlight (torch) or light to plug into bike's electrics.
You know South America; I don't. Make sure you can obtain a new rear tire when necessary.

The extra oil is a good idea.
And the tire, a change in the return, maybe in Buenos Aires. The original tire repair kit could help in a eventual tire blow.

Duck: half the Shog things will carry me to Alaska, not Ushuaia.

And I'll carry a Netbook and will make the whole trip online in the K11OG.
Maybe 3 friend will go with me. One with a KTM 950 Adventure, other with an Honda Varadero and another with a Yamaha 750 SuperTenere.
But in the last trip to Santiago, in 2007, whem I started to plan the trip, a lot of friends said "I'll go too!!!""". But in the end I went alone...
It'll be a 30 days trip.... Be prepared for a lot of pics....

If you're going 12,000 miles then there's no need for an oil change on that trip. Any good synthetic oil (Amsoil, Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella T are all very good synths) will easily last that long. I change my Mobil 1 every 10,000 miles because it's easy to remember that way. I know I could go longer if I needed to.

Same thing with the FD and tranny synth oils except I do those on 20k intervals.

I second the NGK iridium recommendation. Not only do they last MUCH longer but I was riding the LT around today and it just seems to LOVE those plugs.

btw, don't bring 8qts of oil. Bring one, maybe 2. Buy the rest. If you use one, buy a replacement when you can. If you use another before you can buy more... start looking REAL hard for oil!

I would take a good first aid kit and the knowledge of how to use it. Some personal medications like Immodium and Benedryl...things that are not likely to be readily available, yet are also small to pack.

Sounds like the journey of a lifetime...have fun.

Sounds like a GREAT trip- (but HOW do you manage 30 days out of the office??? That seems tougher than the trip itself)
