John,
Good progress so far. You are not far from finished but it's smart to quit early if you can. I've screwed up a few jobs by working way late and making mistakes.
I have to disagree with your machine shop buddy; Those marks are created when you run too long with loose headset bearings. The effect is the same as your friend describes. Elsewhere on this site there is a description of a small device that will enable you to properly set the bearing tension. I caused the same marks on a bearing in an airhead BMW years ago. They use the same bearings by the way.

I appreciate that. Still, even though, as you suggest, I could have used proper maintenance to postpone this problem, I still, at 94K miles am just on my second set of SHB. So, I am too quick to condemn the dealer. Sorry! Interesting how little clues like this will lead to different conclusions. There must be some kind of correlation between paranoia about dealer subterfuge and blame for problems that occur. Also, the info about the same bearings being on the airhead as the K is much appreciated. I have read a lot about bearing tension adjustments and presume you are refering to this: http://www.largiader.com/bearings/ One of these days I hope someone can tell me why my R90/6 has never needed steering head bearings. _________________ John
