Suddenly I can't start with the bike in gear and the clutch in.

1. Is this one switch or a combination?
2. Where are they located?

Its a single switch, plunger style, screwed in the end of the clutch lever housing.

It takes a 10mm(IIRC) if you can get on it. I think the last time I pulled one out I just used a pair of needle nose to get it to turn.

I wanted to clean it and reinstall it, so I didn't want to cut the wires to fit a socket on it.

I probably should know this but what is (IIRC)?

I'll go take a look at it.

As of now I can't figure out how to get in there. Is this a switch that can be rejuvenated or should I have ordered one with my fork seals?

This isn't how it got started with OTG is it?

It's a bitch to get out. I'd recommend removing the clutch lever, spraying some WD-40 in the switch and workign ti a few times to see if it will come back to life.

You mean my tranny problems?

The bike jumped out of 1 and 2nd gear from the day I got it. (very rare though)

No, Dave. I mean think back, when did the disillusionment really start? Was it something little, a couple of inconveniences, then before you know it it's all over and you have a new bike?

Good suggestion Duck. You can see the switch plunger in there. Sprayed it, grabbed it with needlenose, pushed it in and out and in and out, but the spring that must be in there doesn't seem able to push it out even though it moves freely and if I pull it out and start the bike in gear on the centerstand it starts. Seems like I replaced the same switch on my wife's MG a few years ago.

So must be time for a new switch. Anyone know where the other end of that wire ends up?

You'll need to pull the tank to find the other end.

and that is such a lovely confusing birdsnest........

German engineering. Righhhtttt. Friggin' wires packed into a stiff, zip-tied mess. Sometimes I feel like I need to channel Houdini to decipher wtf is going on under there.

phew- glad I got that out of my system.

Nevermind..........

The stok wiring isn't that bad. Yu should see what my bikes look liek under the tank after adding lots of mods. I cna barely get the tank back on on my RS. I pity the fool who buys it (assuming I ever sell it.)

Like he said, I though it HAD to be in neutral to start. I always pull the clutch in when staring (MSF rule #....). Mine has never started in gear, clutch or no clutch...

Are you guys sure???

It will start in gear in you pull the clutch in. (Unless the switch is broken.)

FYI: IF you remove the instrument cluster then the bike won't start unless you pull in the clutch as as the circuitry for being in neutral is in the cluster.

I have pulled my instrument cluster to reseat the harnis just to see if my odometer would work but it does not. Do I need to reset something so my bike will start in gear? Or is my switch f@#ked.

D'oh! One more thing I need to tinker with and attempt to repair, oh well, I've been riding for 5 years without it, ignorance is (was) bliss!

Hi, All,
Once you find the clutch switch (a cylindrical switch screwed into the left grip right in front of the clutch lever), you can either replace it or you can clip the wires, strip the insulation off the ends, twist the ends together and tape the ends. The bike will now start, in gear, with the clutch pulled in. It will ALSO crank (and maybe start) WITHOUT the clutch pulled in, so you have to be careful. I just replaced one on my K75RT (same part in the same location) and, from Chicago BMW it was around $15, maybe less (plus shipping).
Ride Safe,
