|
|
Has anyone fitted fork gaiters to their K11RS ?
I'd like to do this when I'm next home.
The bike is at home in Joburg and I'm at work in Saudi so I cant easily measure it up and visit a few dealers.
I'd expect a collar is needed under the lower triple clamp to hold the gaiter top !!
Are there any suppliers i the UK or US making kits for the bike.
Hopefully i can sort out the parts and have them ready for fitting when I'm at home in a few weeks.
Thanks in advance

Hi, Malcolm,
I've had gaiters on 2 K1100LT's and a couple of K75's. The gaiters I prefer are Rancho part number 1952. If Rancho gaiters (actually shock absorber covers, but work perfectly as gaiters) aren't available in South Africa, the BMW /5, /6 and /7 gaiters will work, although they are considerably more expensive. You will need, at the most, 2 gaiters and 4 hose clamps. I had the gaiters installed on my K1100LT's, and the shop put on hose clamps. I installed the gaiters on the K75's and used no hose clamps. The gaiters stay in place on the K75's (late models - '94 and '95) with no clamps. Good Luck!

When the gaiters on the K were installed, they used black zip ties. I took those off - they're not needed - neither are hose clamps. If you feel you need something to hold the gaiters in place, black zip ties look a lot better than hose clamps. _________________ Jim

Malcon.
This is the ones that I put on my K1100LT.
Thery are OEM from BMW R80.
And I used plastics straps to fix them.
You'll never have problems with fork seals again....
And thanks Jim!!

Hi, Gui (and Malcolm),
Yes, it's true that the gaiters for the airheads (R90/6, R80/7, R75/7/6/5, R60/7/6/5, and R50/5) will work. In the USA, however, there are many auto parts stores and very few BMW motorcycle dealers. The auto parts stores either have or can order the Rancho #1952 shock absorber covers (work perfectly and look just like gaiters) for much less money than BMW parts. In my case, the closest BMW motorcycle dealer is over 400km from me, but within a couple of km there are a number of auto parts stores. 10 years ago, when I had the BMW gaiters installed on my K1100LT, the cost of each gaiter was about $25. 2 Rancho shock absorber covers cost, as I remember, about $20.

Guilherme,
Thanks for the photo's.
Are your gaiters a nice tight fit on the stanchion below the lower triple yoke ? I was imagining I'd need a collar over the stanchion to give a decent fit.
Are you able to give me the internal dia at each end and the overall length and try mailing a few dirt bike dealers in SA initially.

If your not afraid of internet buying here's a link for them on Amazon for a little over $7.
http://www.amazon.com/Rancho-RS1952-Black-Rubber-Shock/dp/B000CPCCFY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1239557575&sr=8-2
The bottom fits nice and tight on the shock lower and I used a razor knive to cut off the very top part of the gaitor and let it float on the stantion. _________________ Ride safe.

I can confirm that the Rancho 1952s fit perfectly and stay on fine with no zip-ties, clamps or modification. I used a paper hole punch to put an additional drain hole at the bottom of the back of the lowest fold. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

malcolmt,
I am in the middle of my first seal fix (along with several other items that desperately need attention).
Others on this site have recommended Rancho # 1952 shock "boots"
Well as I found out today, NOT easy to stretch over the fork leg, but hopefully they will keep road debris off the leg. Here are some pictures of an hours-old install.
Is it possible to have a pair of these sent to you from the USA without any major problems or wacko costs? Truthfully, I have no idea. If it is reasonable, I could get a pair and send them to you. Let me know...

Good morning gents..
I tried to order from amazon, they wernt happy about shipping them to my Saudi PO box.
Found more at Summit racing, they complained about the number of digits in my Saudi mobile phone number.
They arent too urgent so..
If anyone has some dimentions of the Rancho parts i'll fire a few emails off to a several offroad and 4x4 dealers nr home. i expect the cost there will be similar to the US.
Thanks again everyone.
