Hello folks, haven't started it up for about 5 months, just put the bike back together - it's had new ignition switch and RHS handlebar switch - charged the battery (putting out 12.39v), when I went to start it fuel pump wirrred and it went "chunk" and that was it.
I'm guessing that the starter motor has seized and needs an overhaul - has anyone experienced this problem? Is it a difficult job to get to the starter and get it out (and back in again)? Any special tools required (I hope not)? _________________

do a search on starter. there is all kind of info there good luck
sounds like brushes are dusty. one of the threds tell you how to remove your starter and repair it yourself.
here Is just one of the many links you will find by using the search.

Phil,
Do you mean the STARTER whirred and then went clunk?
You may be able to free it by tapping but it will probably need to be overhauled (cleaned, new brushes maybe) for your peace of mind.
It is an easy job.
If it's the starter relay, again, try a gentle tap first. The contacts can weld together if trying to start with a low voltage battery, or the contacts can just stick. Doesn't sound as if the relay is your problem though. |

Hi guys, thanks for the input.
Ivan, it didn't even get the chance to whirr, just chunk. It's been stood up for 5 months so I think it's stuck, or seized. When I've located it I'll try giving it a whack with a hammer, well wrapped in an old t-shirt. after 13 years it probably does need a good clean, but I've only just reassembled the bike. Sod's law. Cheers guys.

Starter is not hard to take out but i think you will have to remove the coils and move the ABS unit if your bike has ABSII.
Have you tried to bump start, the stater is not the type that would go clunk as the gear is permenatly engages with the gear, there is a one way clutch in the gear that lets it drive the engine. Try and put it in gear and roll the bike forwards and backwards to check the engine turns, there might have been moisture in the barrel thats caused rust and the piston is stuck.

christ I hope the pistons are not rusted, my worst nightmare - I'd have to pay to have it trailered somewhere. But how would moisture get into the engine - perhaps I shouldn't ask!!!
It is a heavy thing so jump starting is out of the question. I'll try moving it in gear. Someone mentioned the battery but it's putting out 12.45v after 14 hours on the Optimate - should be enough to start it. _________________

Hi Phil
Just put it in 2nd or 3rd and try to push it forwards to see if the engine turns over.
Water can get in many ways, if it was anywhere damp it can get in through the exhaust system or could be condensation in the engine from the last time it was run.

Hi Rob,
Many thanks, I did just that - well, I stuck it in 5th and jerked the wheel (it took some persuading) a 1/4 turn in both directions, and then it started up. A bit of white smoke, some moisture from the exhaust, but the engine sounded quite sweet. I ran it for about 45 minutes to check that the fan and clear any further miosture out - that'll teach me not to leave it for so long in future without firing it up. I think a change of oils at the weekend. Thanks to everyone who contributed, much appreciated.
Regards,

Hi Phil
Is she going on the starter motor now?
If you do lay her up again for a long time its sometimes worth removing the plugs and putting a little squirt of oil in the cylinders, give a quick spin on the starter with out the plugs in then refit plugs.
When you want to use her again plugs out, blast on starter, plugs back and she will go.
Glad you have her going.

Yeah the starter's doing the job thanks Rob - a post winter oil change at the weekend - 4500 miles since a major service in August so the time's right. A new battery might be in order, been flattened a few times during its 4 years of service, maybe clean out the starter.
I've saved those tips in a text file for future reference. For a '96 model she's in pretty good shape, says a lot about the K1100's. What's the spec on your '99 K1100LTIC Rob? Must be one of the very last issues of this bike? I take it your getting you're getting her ready for the year ahead? Hope we all enjoy many happy and safe miles on our 'Bricks'. Thanks again for the advice.
