As I was trucking around doing farm work I got to thinking about how old I am, how old my bike is, how many miles it has, and how long I think I'll be riding. I'd be perfectly happy if this is the last bike I ever buy.
Bike: 94 K1100LT, 15 years old, almost 30,000 miles
Me: 56 years old, been around the block a few times but relatively healthy
10 years from now @ 3,000 miles a year
Bike: 94 K1100LT, 25 years old, antique plates, almost 60,000 miles
Me: 66 years old, hopefully deteriorating slowly
Hmm, not so bad
15 years from now, maybe less miles per year
Bike: 94 K1100LT, 30 years old, antique plates, almost 70,000 miles
Me: 71 years old, maybe starting to think about selling the bike to a much younger OTG, who has in the same time gone through 7 Hondas and a brace of Suzukis
I guess the big variables are how healthy you are, how young you feel, and how many miles you ride. I know this: riding makes me feel at least a little younger.
How old are you, how long do you hope to ride, what's in your future? _________________ Jim

Geezers??? OK, OK, them's fightin' words
Think quality not quantity!!
Actually Dave- 3K/yr might be low but remember that we have a 7 month season (at best). I managed to get in only 9,000+ miles in '08. Being a sole proprietor has its disadvantages.
Hopefully this year my son on the new Monster can help keep me young.
And maybe I can lure Saltcreek out for a few rides this year- he's under an hour away from me.

Bah I'm just messing with you guys. Should know that by now I am rarely, if ever, serious.
But a 16 year old bike is not a very good choice for the kinds of miles I put on.

Dave's just mad 'cause he's picturing a garage full of wrung out bikes he can't sell
I'm hoping 3000 is low. I didn't buy it until October of last year and was approaching my 1000th mile in December when snow forced me in. With a State slab .3 miles away I've been itching to get out but that .3 is a quagmire of mud, snow, salt and 15 degree grades. I do residential construction for a living so the plan is to set up jobsites with my truck then commute with the bike as much as possible. Maybe I'll get a job up near John but with the economy in the toilet I may have to commute as far as Long Island! _________________ Jim

Ain't much better here mate. My area is pretty much the poster child for overconsumption.
A McMansion on every corner and the owners who saw $$$ when everyone was telling them their house was worth a half a million dollars.
They refinanced, bought 2 SUVS, a boat and a Harley.
Thats why I love you tree-tapping, flapjack-eating, wine swilling NH guys.

Hi Jim,
I bought the bike in May 99 with 13K on the clock. Paid $11K at the time.
Today it has 47K on it so I've been averaging 3.4K miles/yr
Some years I rode 7K miles others the bike mostly sat in the garage.
Thanks to this group I hope to ride it forever. I've never sold a vehicle
I'm not sure if I want to know what's in my future but wifey and I will ride a lot more once the younglings have flown the coop. She stopped riding with me when the two munchkins showed up. Fortunately she's comfortable with me riding solo. She refers to "Ziggy" as my therapist.

I worked with a research scientist who was in his late 80's, still working and riding his honda 125 to work every day, rain, shine and cold. That's what I'm hoping for. _________________ Rich

OOOOH! I wanna see your back yard!!! You must be fairly young if you still own your first car - or a really good mechanic!

| I have had a k75, (86) for 14 years and put about 60,000 miles on it, it had only 10,000 when I bought it and it seems to run as well or better every year. I am 49 and now I think the bike may last longer than I do. Last fall I bought a 93 k1100lt with 33,000 on it and I wonder if that will outlast me as well. I hope to ride till 70 at least. I hope to put on 10,000 miles per year. The math might work out. Never thought I could keep a bike this long and have one that ran this good for this long. Be interesting to see if they wear out or if I trade them off eventually. At the moment I am satisfied. |

Hi Jim,
I'm going to start a new thread titled "Show us your back yards".
I'm in my early forties. First car (bought used) was donated with 100+K on the clock. Second one was stolen at 130K. Wifey's car was totalled at 175K (rear ended by someone asleep at the wheel).
Now that I think about it I did sell one vehicle - my first motorcycle, a used Suzuki GS500E that I put 10K on. _________________ 1997 K1100LT "Ziggy" _GarminGPS_Corbin saddle_K Guards _Hyperlights_Fog lights_Eastern Beaver Relays_Cee Bailey_4"speakers_Michelin PR4's_MoS2_Spiegler lines_TPMS_VDO

I'm 46 and currently ride about 18,000 miles a year.
Average mileage for 1999 to 2005; 30,000 miles.
Top mileage was 2006 at 60,300 miles.
I've aged very quickly over the past three years, joints hurt most of the time, I'm never free of back pain and old injuries have claimed some flexability.
I hope to ride until I can no longer throw a leg over a bike.
Future? I don't really care to own another bike than a K1100RS for the street, but I've entertained a smallish dirt bike.
Future? I hope to one day do a frame-off restoration of the Shop Whore. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Shog's you could convert the "shop whore" into a Trike, no more need to 'throw the leg over'. Might even be a 1st.
Even at that it's still going to be at least 20+ yrs down the road, right? Ya gots too much spunk to give up earlier than that. _________________ Ride safe.
