I am having the stupidest problem...Unable to remove the rear tire/wheel.

I removed the lug nuts, no problem, but could not get the wheel around the brake. So time to RTFM (Read the F***** manual). OK, so I have to remove the caliper, no problem. I take the caliper off, and still can not get the rear wheel/ tire out.

This is crazy, I have no rear end at all, the whole fender is removed, it should not be any easier...but no....

Finally I resort to taking off the rear rotor and ABS ring. Good thing I remembered that they are held on with red loctite. Once the rotor was off I was able to remove the tire.

This can't be normal, what does one do on the side of the road if they have a problem?

The tire is the stock 160/60 Metzeler Z4...I thought someone put an oversize, but that seems stock.

Any ideas, is there a way to easily move the exhaust?

Thanks,
Joe

I just loosen'ed the tail pipe and and bottom bracket that goes from the tail mount to I believe just behind the center stand just look under your bike and you should see it. it gave me just enough room to remove the rear tire .
ofcourse it was my first time and it took longer than I thought it would

Joe,

On the RS you need to loosen the can on the exhaust. On the LT you can just "walk" the wheel out.

(put your year and model bike in your signature, it helps with the dx!)

Please tell us what bike you are referring to. There are lots of similarities in the RS and LT but also lots of differences. I'm not being hostile, we just need to know! Very Happy

It's because you have a 160 section tyre fitted. With a 140 section you can remove the rear wheel simply by removing the studs and rocking the bike over on to the sidestand) with some assistance, of course) - you don't have to remove the fender or loosen the exhaust or anything. It really is a two-minute job.

Its a '94 RS...with the 160 on it.

I did remove the nut on the right side that held the exhaust, but that did nothing as you would have to slide the exhaust back off the bolt.

Thanks,
Joe

Maybe the PO dropped the bike on that side & pushed teh muffler in?

The rear on my 93 RA is tight too even with the caliper & rear lower fender off.

I just used some tire lube on the side of the tire. Sure it was a squeeze & spooged all over the disk & ABS ring, but I just hosed it off. No issues and all worked fine.

If I was on the road & had to do it, I would just deflate teh tire a bit, put on the new or repaired tire with just a bit of air in it and try that.

Thanks for the reply....would not surprise me. Muffler can has a small dent on the top, but not the outside edge? I'll look further for signs of damage.

that would explain why mine was so hard to get off.. mine was knocked over/backed into in a condo parking lot befor i got it. I had to loosen the can and the bracket just to get enough room to get the tire off. did'nt think about letting the air out..wonder if that would have made a diff Question Question

Just let sufficient air out until the wheel can be removed.

Cheers

Make sure the gearbox is in neutral so when you squeeze the wheel pass the ABS ring it moves with the tyre instead of taking a chunk of metal out of the wheel. I remove caliper and mudguard as well but I can just get the 160 rear out without touching the exhaust.

Not even close with the caliper off...the tire still rubbed the exhaust and the rear drive hard, with the rear rotor off. Still a tight fit. I thought about taking air out of the tire...I think that would have worked, but I was taking off the rotor anyway...

Thanks for the replies...I think it is the exhaust, but I have no reference.

Despite my moniker, my bike is a 93
Go into pictures and look at " My 94 - K1100RS - no red seat "

One of the last pictures has a shot from the back, good idea of how much room there is from the muffler to the tire.

Also of note, hard to tell really, but I think your exhaust is not stock.

Could be worng though.

I took the exhaust off on my bike. Now I have a Staintune exhause that's in two pieces and it only takes two bolts to remove the exhaust can.

removal is as follows...

1 remove valve core. must allow to breath during on off
2 remove tail mud flap and brake caliper
3 apply murphy oil soap to portion of tire that will contact muffler and shaft ( soap is optional)
4 wiggle tyre off bike. note while bike is on center stand and supension is extended your working clearance is diminnished hence the soap
when installing the tyre after you have set the bead you must remove the core again
install is reversal of the above.
