|
|
Hi folks,
I need to replace the front brake lines with stainless ones. I understand that there are 4 lines. I can see three of them:
splitter to left caliper
splitter to right caliper
bottom of yoke to splitter
But where does the 4th go and is it straight forward to replace?
Thanks

Yes there are two that go from the master cylinder. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

+1: its from the master cylinder - goes under the tank and connects up to the pipe line (don't know what else to call it) that then goes to the ABS servo. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

I fitted a full set of front/rear to my LT (ABS II).
You have to remove the fuel tank, and firkle around with the mess of wiring which lives along the frame top tube.
The m/cyl flexy pipe mates up to a hard pipe, which runs to a union above the radiator cover, on the RHS of the bike.
With a bit of cleaning and polishing, you should budget on two hours to fit the hoses, and another hour or so to bleed up. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Just curious but why do you guys want to install stainless brake lines? Being a fan of stainless crap, if it's for show I can understand that but it's not like the K11 brakes are mushy. In fact, when the brake fluid is kept fresh I find mine to be a little TOO grabby - especially at low speeds.
Also note that many are of the opinion that the stainless abraids the encased brake lines makes them degrade more quickly. I have no opinion or hard data on this but it SOUNDS logical. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well Drake, let me answer that from my perspective. Brake lines do fail instantaneously, our bike are getting to be fossisl , and they are cheaper than OEM. And they will last the lifetime of the bike. My.02. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Like Mystic Red said, I'm replacing as one of the hoses has a small crack in it, which could fail instantaneously as they've been there for 12 years and 140,000 miles. After all rubber hoses are meant to have a lifespan of 3 years.
The stainless ones are cheaper than OEM BMW ones and not much more than after market rubber ones, a no brainer really.
Thanks for the advice Chopper.

Because, after 12-16 years, your OEM brake hoses WILL have degraded. The internal reinforcment weakens, allowing the hoses to swell slightly every time you press the lever.
A couple of years back, a buddy brought his bike to me, complaining of a soggy front brake.
Checking the front hoses, the outer case had split, and the cords had perished.
Every time he braked, the inner case came out like an egg.
So, all K11 hoses should be replaced - do you want to buy new OEM at three times the cost of braided stainless

I have no idea what this means. Will you clarify, please _________________ C1 200 (2001)

If you have 30K on a 15 year old bike do you just replace the lines or do you defer if
a. Brakes feel good
b. Lines visually inspect good
c. Old brake fluid looks decent when changed _________________ Jim

Respectfully disagree. Outside can look fine but inside can be damaged. Brake fluid is nasty stuff and does havoc to the rubber over time. One of the problems that can happen is the inside disengrates and or it can also swell. Brakes are nothing to scimp on. When in doubt, change it out. My .02 _________________ "Badges? Hmmmm....my 30 year old R100S has a plethora of brake lines, rubber hoses, gas lines and things that have never been a problem. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Consider yourself lucky.
Trust us when we say they weaken overtime. I am an aircraft mechanic and brake lines on aircraft are changed out every 5 years. No matter what they look like. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

It's time for me to change my stock brake lines as well and I was considering the Stainless Steel option as well. Where do you guys recommend I go for the best parts/price?

I bought at Speigler too. No problems. If you have the Bar-Backs research a longer hose. Some say its needed some say no. I had an extra long one made. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

I just did mine Monday. Pulled the old lines, ran into Spokane to the House of Hose, and an hour later they handed me 4 new stainless hoses. The only one that was a PITA was the one that comes off the m/c. I pulled the tank, couldn't see the connection, so I looked behind the forks, above the radiator and found it. Then I parted the wiring under the tank to access.
Ebay sells 2 hoses for $130ish and House of Hose built all 4 for $184. My advise is to find someone local that builds them. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Spiegler has a kit to fit both of the K1100's. I've had Spiegler on the K for a number of years now - no problems. _________________ Jim
