After my last foray in to the bellhousing to cure my starter problem I replaced the oil seal and o-ring on the way out ,since then I had a tiny drop of oil in the tell tale hole at the bottom of the bellhousing and now the clutch is slipping when I gas it , I have all the new bits again friction plate o-ring seal bolts etc. The new seal is skinnier than the old one as was the one I just put in , viewing from the rear does it go flush to the front (gearbox) side or rear (crank) side of the bellhousing casing .
(1990 K1 16v engine/gearbox).
Regards
Bill

Bill,
Read these articles and both of the caution notes.
http://ibmwr.org/ktech/mainseal.shtml
The rear main seal on the engine output shaft is not installed flush, it is installed 0.020" 'proud' of the rear of the engine block.
