YEAH! The 1985 K100RS I bought a couple of weeks ago as a "parts bike" will be a running bike today. <fingers crossed>

All of the fairing bits and side covers were there but very little hardware. I only had to buy one lower $3 fairing bracket after looting my collection of K bits and pieces for other missing parts and most of the fairing hardware. The only thing missing now is the RS air deflector.

One of the side cover attachments was broken but luckily the tab was still on the bike. I put that back on with lots of LocTite Weld(similar to JB Weld) and it will NEVER come off again - I even embeded four hardened steel nails in the Weld to make sure it never breaks again.

I had to replace the fuel pump and clean the water out of the gas tank - and replace the blown fuel pump fuse. With fresh gas, it started right up like it was run last week.

For some reason, the turn signal ligthing has been jumbled up and was also blowing fuses. I sorted that out before putting the fairing back on.

Everything works and the bike starts in a heartbeat even when cold.

The front master cylinder was filled with DIRTY brown liquid - calling it brake fluid is not appropriate. The reservoir was incredibly stained and I didn't trust the master cylinder anyhow so I replaced it with a nice used one.

Both of the front calipers had left puddles of something on the rotors under the pads. I'm guessing it's brake fluid so I think both front calipers are shot so I'm replacing them this morning and then have to putz with getting things full of brake fluid and hopefully getting all of the air out.

The rear brake system seems to have survived years of neglect somehow. Shocked

The bike has 53k. When I lubed the splines both the tranny and FD splines looked very nice.

Once I've got the front brakes done, changed the coolant and filled it with various oils I will put the 2009 tab on it, get all ATGATT'd up and go for a spin.

Hopefully later today I will have pictures of the inaugural ride instead of crash pics. Laughing

("FYK" stands for Finest Year K. It's an acronym coined by owners of 1985 K100s who are of the opinion that 1985 was the best year.)

i would put some knobby tires on it and make it an endurobrick...

you could rent it out to r1200gs riders when their giant dirt bikes are waiting for warranty parts...

Very Happy

Being lighter, a K75 might be better suitedto a GS conversion. Like this:

Some crazy Aussie bloke did it ..... he's crazier than JO by a country kilometer.

That K75 is sweet, just what I'm looking for in my quest for a proper dual sport companion to my trusty K11.

I'm sure your K bike resurrection will be a success and the new owner will be glad someone with your expertise brought it back to life.

There will be K bike karma points waiting for you!

Taking a break now. Front brakes were surprisingly easy to get to fill. I used a Mighty Vac and lever squeezing and they filled right up. The key on the 2 valve bike master cylinders is to loosen the throttle perch and roatate it back so air can escape from the piston. I suspect there's still some micro-bubbles in the sytem but I'll rebleed/refill tomorrow after those have settled to the top.

I pulled off the rotors and found about 20 yards of fishing line wrapped around the axle. The rotors were pretty groas but cleaned up OK with some degrasinger w/ steel wol and then brake cleaner for the braking surface.

Back to work......

Oops, I forgot to mention the whole name: "Put Obama on Mt. Rushmore - with a Trebuchet."

(Oh crap, now the Secret Service is gonna come knockin' at my door. But they've probably got enough to worry about with Hitlery back in the WH as SoS. Laughing )
