Ok all, I would like your thoughts and opinions please.

I was riding about 4000-4500 rpm down the highway, thought I would open it up a little bit. Got up to 5000 and the bike started to hesitate and fall on it's face until I would let up on the throttle and slow down.

Stopped for fuel and it was running real bad. In fact would stay running under 1500.

Limped it home, about 80 miles.

I have good spark on all 4 plugs, I have good fuel from all 4 injectors.

I have good compression on Cyl 1 @160+ Cyl 4 @150+ and Cyl 2 & 3 are at 0, zilch, nada.

Water never got overheated, running about 1/2 on the dial, and the level hasn't changed.

Oil level hasn't changed.

I'm betting that I blew the head gasket between #2 & #3.

Thoughts?????? Rolling Eyes

Mileage 36500

Next question, repair or replace?

Thanks all.

Yup, sounds like a failed head gasket, but might be burnt valves, too. Either way, pulling the head will reveal all.

Repair I think. 36,000 miles, it is a fluke the gasket went, so sorry. Sad
I kinda wish you could delete a post you inadvertently sent. Moderators?

Thanks Mods!
Scott, my first post read, "Repair, I think." Then I tried to pull it back and add the rest as I thought that was a skimpy response. When it went back to the thread both if my replies were there and no way to delete the first. Someone thankfully took care of it as I could not.

Scott - you can repair that bike for less than the price of another motobrick. If you buy another one there's always a chance something could go wrong with it.

On the bright side - it waited until near the end of the riding season - you'll have it ready to ride before spring...

Yeh, my first thought was replacing just the motor, not the whole bike.
Then it's like 36K isn't so bad on the rest of the engine so I'll fix it. Besides with a used engine you don't really know what your going to get. Shocked

Spring? short of snow I plan to ride all winter. I'm going to give Gina's a call later to see about $.
I thought about pulling the head myself, but it's like the oil pump has been weeping at the weep hole, (probably the shaft seal) and the valve clearances could be checked and adjusted real easy in the process(which I don't have the tools for). My tool box isn't quite that big.

Hold out for hope.. Mine exhibited similar symptoms and turned out to have a dodgy plug. Good luck Smile

Getting ready to take her to the shop on thursday.
I checked the valves tonight. All within spec.

Intake 1 2 3 4
.006 .006 .006 .006 .006 .006 .006 .005

Exhaust 1 2 3 4
.008 .008 .009 .009 .009 .009 .009 .009

So I think I can safely say that it's not valve related.

Might not be, but a burnt valve can still be in spec at the cam.

Yep Dave, I stand corrected. I guess that I made the comment based on a conversation with the mechanic this morning that he thought that I might have "stuck" valves. I was checking for stuck valves. I realize that burnt valves can't be seen until the head is pulled.

Update:
Phone call from service, "most likely, blown head gasket". Tech made that determination today.

So we're looking at about another 7-10 days to have it all done(including oil pump shaft seal).

Status Update

Today's phone call,
Tech pulled the head off: "head gasket fine. Did find 1 burnt exhaust valve in each cylinder. Haven't seen that happening either in the past. It's a new one on them."
So I'm going to call the tech tomorrow and discuss possible causes. Service MGR is suggesting vac leak causing lean mixture. They are also questioning my Autolite 4163 plugs being compatible( he was going to research it deeper).
We'll see where this goes.
