(Modertor note from Duck: Moved to Pictures...'cuz it's got lots of 'em. )
We had the last 2 weeks off and started out by visiting my sister and her hubby on the Skykomish River We took the Buick (BLEEEH!) because this was a dog friendly trip.
Here's the back of the cabin.
And the front with views.
This is Willy. My sis raises guide dog puppies for the blind and Willy will head off to doggy college next month.
Here is our poodle by a lake we hiked into.
And the small stone which came out the back of the lake.
This critter tried to sneak through the yard in broad daylight but the poodle has a severe hatred of coons and put it up a tree.
We got home on Friday and left on Saturday headed for Stanley, Idaho. Our first leg took us to Orofino, ID, a small town next to the Clearwater River where we stayed at the world famous White Pine Motel. Hey, it's clean, $49 bucks a night, and owned by an old friend.
The next day we headed out early as it was supposed to hit 110 in Orofino and we wanted to gain some elevation. Here's the couple who rode with us, Bob and Betsy with me and the little woman and I.

Someone died or moved away.
Bob's '03 Heritage.
We made it to Lolo Hot springs half roasted and moved into our little cabins. We DID NOT use our free passes to soak in the hot spring however.

The cabins were $85 but you could get a teepee for $25. No thanks.
We shot down to Hamilton, MT the next day and the over the pass back in to Idaho. Another hot day but it was cooler up here.
We arrived at Stanley and checked into the Redwood Cabins. Only redwood was the painted office.
They were pretty nice though, right on the river.
Old cabin.
The next day we went over Galena Pass to Sun Valley/Ketchum. No Demi Moore sightings but yuppies were everywhere.
No one wanted to take pics of Yuppyville so we headed back over the pass and stopped at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery where sockeye, king salmon and steelhead were retuning to spawn.
Assorted adult salmonids.
That night my wife saw a chinook or a steelhead working it's way up in the shallow water in front of the cabin. Pretty cool. The water was shallow there so it's back stuck out of the water.
I had bought a 7 piece 4 weight pack rod for the trip and I got to try it out the next day. It's awesome!
Bob's Harley started to make engine noise over Galena Pass but only when he let off of the throttle. My wife over heard him talking to his bike. While wagging his finger at it he said something like, "As much as I baby you, you son of a bitch, you better not leave us down here." Priceless.
After 3 days in Stanley we head over Lowman Pass to McCall, then Riggins for lunch. Everywhere you turn in the Sawtooths is a pass.
Our goal is a ranch near Cottonwood, ID owned by a friend. Riggins is an hour south of the ranch and there is where it started pouring on us. When we got to the ranch they had this place for the K-Bike and ailing HD.
He's got a nice house,
with spectacular views of the Salmon River breaks.
Uneatable hoofed critters for Johnny.
We stayed the night there and left for home which was a 3+ hour ride. Stopped only once, for gas, and prayed the Harley made it. It did but Bob has not got a diagnosis from the tech yet. Hell, it only has 20K on it and he does baby it! Let the Harley bashing begin. Hope I didn't bore you guys too much. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Update on the ailing Harley. The old compensator nut syndrome. It holds the compensator gear on which is connected to the primary drive chains. Makes it a little smoother accelerating and decelerating until the nut comes loose and then it make a God awful noise decelerating. Don't know how it came loose as the book calls for torque of 150 to 165 foot #'s. Well yea, I do know how it could come loose in an antiquated tractor engine.

Funny thing about that drool, public drooling could flunk a dog out of the program. One of many things that will disqualify a dog. But I don't think my sister would care. She has trained a bunch of them and really loves Willy. If he flunks she's got first dibs.

Right here behind the cabin the water didn't have enough structure to hold fish, I just had to try that rod, but 5 miles downstream..............

Smoked coon, yummm. Salmonids are even more special. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I could tell it was you, Micki, you know how use the shift button. And I approve of JO's new avatar! Definitely an upgrade.
If we do get to hook up next summer the drinks, dinner and sun screen for John's noggin are on us. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Awesome pics,
I hope to make it to the West Coast meet and greet. I'll be sure to bring you a mini fire extinguisher
BTW,
I have already replaced the fuel sensor, EWS ring and the front strut on my new GS. If I didn't work for a dealer and have full access to the shop, I would be pissed.
Best of Luck, _________________ Dom |
