Hello everybody, just wanted to say hi, and that I'm very glad of this community, it being specific to our beloved 1100cc's I've already been using the vast archive for tech advice, but I just thought I'd introduce myself before the inevitable flood of technical questions
I've owned a K1100RS for 6 months now, and for the first 5 months I was doing 500+ miles a week on her, hence my constant referrals to the tech section(!) Under such heavy use though, apart from quite crappy oil consumption (1litre/1000miles or more, but I know I'm not alone. The first owner was a priest, so maybe his tentativeness with the throttle explains that) I've fallen in love with the handling and build quality. Even after the 10,000 miles during my tenure in all weathers, she polishes up like new, and reaches 140mph, so there can't be much wrong with the motor. http://www.flickr.com/photos/81929179@N00/2360420591/ is a link to a pic of her on my Flickr page if you fancy a gander.
I still have an old K100RT as a spare that I bought a couple of years back and used for 18months, and have had loads of issues with both bikes, but I suppose I've caught the BMW bug, as I could not imagine going back to any other make.. Don't ask me why..
Anyway, I look forward to helping and being helped by others with this strange disease. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Too bad you don't have picture of the priest on the bike. That would be priceless.

Thanks for the welcome one and all.
John, that bike looks to be in better order than mine - really nice
Yeah, two previous owners - I had to remove the residue of one of those "Fish" badges from it's time as a religious conveyance! Still, the chassis tracks like new, so that kind of previous owner has its advantages. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Hi from another Brit, whereabouts in London are you? I normally have a good collection of parts that I've sourced over the years for my LT and a couple of 100 LT's that I maintain [over the phone a lot of the time] for a couple of friends so maybe able to assist you with bits or info or even help. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

Welcome CJC,
Don't you know it's bad luck to remove those "Fish" badges?
But what do I know, I ride an LT... _________________ Kent

Hi,
I LOVE the fish badges, especially the ones with legs which say "Darwin" in the middle!

Lest there remain any doubt, this should prove who the true masters of the English language are. I love how the Brits are vastly more articulate than we Yanks in even casual conversation.

I know, I know. Some do though it seems . I noticed a puff of smoke on the test ride, but the bike was in first class order in every way, with a full service history and two previous owners. It just didn't compute in my brain that it was going to guzzle oil, after all, "how could it?" Well I'll be damned, it does..
I've heard rumours of a batch of bad valves on some 1100 engines (Friday afternoon?), and this seems the most likely explanation, as the smoke is 100% top end related, only appearing after periods of idling, and never when hammering it. I think as BMW allow for this in the spec, nothing was ever admitted. Besides, a boxer will munch through as much oil, and those guys just seem to deal with it. A bit embarrassing at the lights though
Oh and yeah, I try to keep posts literate - can't stand allcaps or textspeak and the like _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

No chance of that, the oil usage is to my mind merely a quirk, as it is simply a lovely machine in every way, that gets extra oil
The engine is as tight as a drum, makes the tiniest of rustles, even at idle, and pulls like a train. My RS makes bypassers smile, and I only ever see another one once in a blue moon. Biking nirvana.
And thanks again for being such a welcoming bunch _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Welcome, Neil!
Here's a pic of my '94. I know what you mean about oil consumption. I fill my crankcase to the top of the circle in the sight glass. Following about 250 miles of spirited riding, the oil level is near the middle of the sight glass. At this point, consumption slows to what seems normal.
