My 1993 K1100RS has 60K miles and needs an oil change. What synthetic oil is best?

Local BMW parts guy suggested running about anything 10W-40 synthetic, especially if in sustained cooler (45 deg. or less) temps. If running primarily in "hot" weather then use 20W-50. BMW sells it's own "Super Synthetic" 15W-50, which leads me to believe they figure it's the optimum weight for all types of riding.

Typically, I ride alot in summer in hot climates. 20W-50 makes sense to me, however I wonder if such heavier oil is best for my K11. I've been running Mobil 1 Racing 4T 15W-50 and found a free shipping deal on the internet of $63 bucks for a case (6 quarts) of 10W-40 or 20W-50:

I've run Amsoil in cars I used to have and now consider it for my K11. It may not be as convenient and quick to get when compared to the deal mentioned above. https://www.amsoil.com/products/power_sports_guide.pdf
Notice on page 2, they don't have 15W-50, but there is sort of a crossover from both their 10W-40 and 20W-50 to include 15W-50.

I'm leaning toward Mobil 1 20W-50, is there anyone here who could give just cause that this oil should not be married... Smile

You won't go wrong with either Mobil or Amsoil, 15W50 or 20W50. I have run both year round even riding near freezing temps. No problems.

Yes - and no one is ever able to identify what constitutes a good or a bad oil! Rolling Eyes

You think there are lots of oil posts here - I've just bought a BMW 3 Series (e90). On the e90 Post forums the whole site is populated by drivers who cannot believe the oil changes specs provided by BMW (up to 19k miles) and insist on changing the oil every 3K miles.

No wonder oil is becoming scarce (and bloody expensive over here)

Rant over Laughing

My .02 is that Valvoline 10w-40 Synth/Dino blend works just fine.

I try not to patronize Wal-Mart any more than possible.

Long live the Unions...
