I was in a situation yesterday in which my tank was almost empty and 10% ethanol gas was the only blend available. My 1994 K1100RS ran fine with the gas, but I questioned if it was safe to use. I'd appreciate your input.

Geoff - as far as I know, 10% ethanol won't hurt the bike. But it is a waste of food... Rolling Eyes

Gee, I guess I was thinking of the food riots. I hadn't heard of the alcohol riots...

If it makes the bike go, is it really a waste of alcohol?

Meh, food riots are nothing. Ted Turner says the temperature will rise 8 degrees in the next 30-40 years and that cannibalism will soon be upon us. Shocked

Quote:
“We’ll be eight degrees hotter in 10, not 10 but 30 or 40 years, and basically none of the crops will grow,” Turner said on Charlie Rose’s PBS show. “Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals. Civilization will have broken down.”

Geoff, back to your original question.
I've used the 10% mix as well when I had no other choice, but I wouldn't totally use it all the time or use it for the last fill of the season before a long turn lay-up.
If I have the choice of a higher octane with ethanol mix or a lower octane without, I personally would use the lower octane.

Just my .02 worth.

Ride Safe

hey Scott - way to ruin a perfectly good thread drift...

I agree with you, though. I'd use the lower octane given a choice...

Well, at least we've got our K bikes to keep us warm. Laughing And, as some people have discovered, they're good at cooking human flesh.

Where I live there has been no choice but 10% in any grade for a long time. Never had a problem in either bike. Haven't even changed the floats in my R-bike, although they are available.

As I recall, about 30 years ago we were all going to freeze our asses off in the coming ice age, big time. Sorry, but to believe government or science in any of their predictions is becoming extremely difficult for me.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't normally use 10% ethanol, but more and more gas stations in Illinois are selling it. I would have avoided it; however, I was running on reserve and had no choice.
