While my bike was down waiting for a new rear master cylinder to arrive, I decided to take the opportunity to do the annual changing of all the fluids. Long story short, oil is in the coolant. Hoping it's just the head gasket and not a cracked head. Trucking her to Grass Roots this weekend, wish me luck...

Whatever the problem ends up being, I'll still make Hungry Mother, it just might be on a different bike if mine is still down.

It's the water pump seal.

Check with what the Duck says. I didn't understand how it worked until it was too late and I had it all apart to change the head gasket. My head gasket looked fine when I got it out. I changed all the seals in oil and water pump while I was at it.

Steve said the same thing (before knowing what the Duck posted) and he said it's not all that hard to get to.

Don't forget - there's a trick here. If you order a new seal for the water pump - either order the new bushing the seal likes, or be prepared to shorten the old bushing. The new seal is thicker - it does not like the old bushing. You can grind the old bushing down if you want to reuse it.

Even if he isn't (I'm sure he is), my mantra when fault finding, is to try the cheapest & easiest possibilities first. When One gets a nasty symptom, tis human nature to immediately imagine worst (most expensive) outcome.

Can you explain how the oil can go from the oil side of the pump ,passing the wheep hole canal and entering the coolant side?
If the wheep hole is blocked, I can agree.

So rydor, check and clean the wheep hole first. If no oil is dripping out after you have brushed it with a thin wire, I guess your head gasket is leaking.
