|
|
So my RS has been for sale a while.
Yesterday I get a e-mail asking for details about the bike.
I send them wihtou saying my exact location.
today I get an e-mail from the same guy blushing about how he wants this great bike. He will send a money order and call his shipping company about the bike. Of course i should cash the MO and send the shipping company the overpayment for the shipping.
Yeah right.

Back in the early days of the Internet, I had my 82 650 Nighthawk on Craig's List for $250 since it hadn't been run for eons.. I think the first spam I ever got was a person from Nigeria who wanted to buy it and "would arrange shipping." _________________ 93 LT (x2)

For the last few years there was a website that was dedicated to documenting these schemes. This woman had many stories related to "Nigerian scams". It had started with one scam to purchase a horse that she had for sale
http://www.bustedupcowgirl.com/scampage.html
But I see that the link to it is dead.
Anyway, from what I have read (much of it from her site) in some cases the bank draft, cashier's check or money order they send you looks very authentic. Even fooling many bank employees when you go to deposit it. But several days later you will be notified by the bank that it was bogus and you have already sent YOUR money to the "shipper".
Classic Nigerian scam.
Really sad thing is that sometimes it does work for these scam artists and lots of people have lost LOTS of money. |

Too bad we can't send them a bike with gps tracking devices and work with Interpol to track and arrest all the bastards. If such a sting could be organised I think we would all contribute. _________________ The truth is 100 miles east of Memphis

Actually these "people" never have any intention of taking posession of an object. They just want YOUR money. The item "purchase" is a bit of a diversion to take the seller's mind off what is really happening. They do not care about the conterfeit money they send you or your for sale item. They want the REAL money that you send their "shipper".
Besides - things for sale can be traced easier than money, and they are very aware of that. |

Anyone who wants to use Western Union or similar wire service is scamming you.
If someone offers you a certified check from a bank, get the number of the check from the buyer then call the bank and you can verify if it is legit or not.
The best way to pay for something is a USPS Money Order. (In the US anyhow.) Since the USPS has postal inspectors and they take mail fraud seriously, postal inpectors will actually make an effort to track down and procesute frauds. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
