I'm looking for battery for my 96 K1100 RS. All the sites only list up to 95. Same battery?

Very Happy Yep!

I've got a 1996 K1100LT with an Odessey PC680 battery and highly recommend you get the dry cell battery. They last longer, have more power, etc etc but best of all, they don't leak acid when you drop the K.

Friends: For what it is worth, last summer I purchased a 36 month, Yacht Brand (made by Yuassa) battery from the J.C. Whitney Catalogue for my 1987 K100LT. It cost $72.00 delivered. I then purchased a container of battery acid for about $4.00 from an auto parts store. The battery dimensions are 7-1/4"L.x4-15/16"W.x6-15/16"H. This battery is rated at 28 amp.hour and has a 300 amp. cold cranking rating. The battery is configured, when viewed from the top, with the vent on the right side and the positive terminal on the right top near the front. The only thing that I would warn about is filling the battery with acid. BE VERY CAREFUL and let the battery "gas-off" with the fill caps REMOVED for about eight hours after installing the acid and when first connecting a charger. It is very important to follow the iacid filling instructions exactly when first adding acid and charging to allow the gasses to vent! Otherwise, an explosion WILL occur! The J.C. Whitney battery exactly fit my BMW K100LT battery tray and hold down clamp with no problems. It is catalogue number C60-N24AL-B. It was also supplied with a new vent tube. This was the lowest cost 36 month warrantied battery I could find for the K100. So far, the battery seems to be performing well with no problems. I note that their catalogue shows the K1100 and K100 (and K75) all use the same battery. I keep it charged properly with a BATTERY TENDER type maintainer. - Euripides

Euripides - the AGM batteries don't cost that much more than wet cell batteries. Although there's nothing wrong with wet cell batteries, I for one, prefer AGM - no vent, no acid to deal with, no acid to leak if you tip the battery or the bike over.

I went with a Panasonic AGM for 76.50 delivered. I hope this is a good one.

Thanks for all your input.

Jim: I agree fully with what you are saying. I really would like not having a vent and not spilling acid. But for the time being, I will just keep using my J.C. Whitney special. I looked at that dry battery web site but could not find prices for my old K100.- Euripides

What are the specifications as to amp/hour and cold cranking ratings on the Panasonic AGM? Is it a "36 or 24 month rated" battery?? If the ratings are equal or greater than the J.C. Whitney special, that sounds like a good decision to go with the Panasonic AGM? - Euripides

Euripides,

I think you'll find that the K100 and K1100 batteries are a different size, due to the ABS, but I stand to be corrected on that.

Friends: Assuming those figures for the dry cell battery are accurate, then the wet cell battery from J.C. Whitney is an electrically stronger battery; the amp/hour rating is 28% greater and the cold cranking amperage is nine percent greater. The Whitney Catalogue makes NO distinction for a different battery size or type for the years stated for bikes with or without ABS brakes. The Catalogue shows the K1100, K100 and K75 all use the same battery for all versions. For any given bike, a stronger battery will, in theory, last longer than a weaker one because it is not electrically stressed as much as the smaller one. - Euripides

Another Question: Is the Panasonic AGM a 24 or 36 month rated battery? There is a big difference! - Euripides

I don't know if they're 24 or 36 month rated. I have two of them - one is a Westco branded Panasonic - the other a Panasonic. The older of the two is still starting the bike six years later - much better service than I ever got from a wet cell.

I got 4 years out of my Odyssey 680 - bought it for my K75RT, moved it to the LT when I changed bikes. It was still going strong when I replaced it. (I replaced it because I misdiagnosed it as a battery problem when I added too much lighting and killed the battery. What I needed to do was upgrade the alternator.)

It's still holding a nice charge in my basement. After about 8 months sitting, it's still holding a charge above 12 volts.

I'd buy another in an instant.

Had almost 10 years on my Odyssey when I sold my '96K11RS last year. As far as I know the new owner is still using it.....? When my factory '07 TR-SST battery goes bad, it will be replaced by an Odyssey. Razz

Lou,

you are correct. The K1100 with ABSII can not hold a battery wider than 3.25'' because of the ABS modulator located next to it.

Hi, 1993 K11LT with ABS. Once the battery is past two years I find the ABS will not set properly from cold (ok when restart after a few seconds). Just had another new bat, but no good.

Anyone know whether the cranking AMPs is the issue (and where do I look for that number) fitted by a non BMW mechanic Crying or Very sad

thanks

I just ordered a new "gel" battery from BMW, my question is:
Do I need a new charger for it? or will my old BMW charger that plugs into the bike work?

I don't want to destroy the battery or F@#K my electical system.

Safe riding

If you want to do it correctly and money is no object. Buy the "LATEST" BMW charger. The new smart charger will charge anything, Gel, Lead Acid, AGM etc. It comes with the plug in charger for the bike and an adaptor for the wierd plugs in Europe. I would not buy the junky BMW/Deltran charger model thats made in CHINA: I had two of them fail on me. I am not a huge fan of the Exide/ BMW Gel Battery though either. However, if you buy a gel, particulary the BMW Gel model, I would have the dealership charge it to full capacity before you pick it up. The main reason I have gathered for the special charger is that if the battery is very weak it needs the special charger to cycle it properly. Once the battery is at full capacity any trickle charger will maintain it, provided it does not get fully discharged.
