Hi Fellow Brick Riders
Recently part ex'd my 93 K11RS (45000 astral blue) for a 94 (35000 classic black) and I'm not sure I've done the right thing! - I've noticed oil emulsification in the sight glass and around the crankcase filler cap. The dealer assures me that the oil and filter were recently changed. The motor runs smoothly and my trip home from Looe in Cornwall to Newport in South Wales (170 miles) was a pleasure - the big K ran beautifully. However, I am concerned that I may have the start of a serious problem, if the oil is being contaminated with water/coolant could this be a head gasket leak? I have noticed that the water and oil pump is a combined unit is it possible that this may be the problem? Any advice would be appreciated. Yours worriedly Photoman |

Photoman,
I would change the oil and filter out yourself and see what happens. Every winter my bike sits a cold Cleveland garage for around 3 or 4 months my oil always gets a lot of clouding from condensation. Therefore, I change my oil in the Fall and Spring to get out the cloudy stuff. So depending on where the bike was stored may be giving you the cloudy look of the oil. In any case, I would change it out, before I started to worry.
Best of Luck, _________________ Dom |

As well as check you coolant level at the filler cap or tank level to see if your loosing coolant.
The head gasket has 3 areas that can leak into the sump. You could try to torque the head again, but a new gasket is propably your best bet. Having done one, its fairly easy but time consuming.
check out this 2v head off. the small hole bottom left of #1 is the oil send, and the 2 areas with shop towells are the returns. Oil could be getting in the returns quite easly

personally, on both my K75RT and my K1100LT I got some emulsification every winter. i noticed this in the oil filler cap. The only problem I got from it was the starter freewheel gumming up. to make the engine run al little hotter (blasphemy!) I reduced flow through the radiator, by taping off about half and took care to make occasional longer rides. this took care of any problems i had.

Thanks guys for your responses. I drained the coolant today to see if there was any oil contamination - it was crystal clear. I have found out that the previous owner hardly used the bike, it has been laid up for long periods (years) in a location near the sea - maybe this is the reason. I will change the oil and filter as suggested and hopefully the problem will be sorted. Mark (Photoman) |
