Has anyone else has been reading about the new K bikes woes? I have read about rims and rotors warping: A bunch of Airbox troubles. Final drive problems of all types. And a few other misc problems.

The only problems I recall K bikes having when they were first introduced, were: crappy grab handles for the passenger and instrument cluster problems. The new bikes seem to be much worse then that Sad

I guess I 'll have to keep mine for a few more years :>) The company here isn't half bad anyway Smile

I love my K.

They just recalled the brakes on one of the K1200 bikes. They recommended not even riding it to the dealer. Shocked

The reason I like the classic Ks is that you can do all of your own maintenance - makes it affordable to own one.

Not to mention that I'm not a big fan of the newer tupperware. I think a bike should have a gas tank. (But those K1200 GTs sure look sweet.)

OTG,

I agree about the looks of those new BMW's. BUT...IMHO when they changed to the inline 4 across the frame, BMW gave away some of the "unique-ness" of their engine designs. Kind of what makes a BMW a BMW.

Many are beginning to question BMW's quality. It all started with R bike surging. Now we have rear drive failure and numerous K bike recalls. Reports following the 2007 Iron Butt and some nasty posts on the bmw.com message board haven't helped. Some say the problem isn't widespread. This doesn't matter, however. The fact is the potential for failure exists. Anyone spending $15 large or more shouldn't have to worry about this matter.

This bike is WICKED fast and I run out of road or nerve before it runs out of velocity. Shocked

Steve has seen 160+ mph GPS confirmed.

My only complaint is the clutch is hard for me to hold in for long times like at lights.

I am pretty sure the $5000 Amex deal was very limited and not a dealer wide event. You had to register to buy at that price and only about 2 were sold that way nationwide. I could be wrong, it has happened before.

But Gwen is right. The KR market is SOFT...$3000 discounts and 5 free payments from BMW are killing the resale market. I guess I will just leave mine plugged in on the tender and ride this some more...

I ride a K, but my soul is in the dirt, with a history of BMX and MTN bike racing, and learning to ride motorcycles on old XR 75s and CR80s and 125s.

Wife said I can get a Dual sport after we buy a house, which is like 2years away.

Still wondering what would be the best for me, something bombproof, economical and maintainable with enough cojones to kick up some serious dirt for my massive bulk. (I am 6'3" 280)

Was thinking about a KLR 650 but it might be too small/cramped for me.

How to the Vstroms hold up in the dirt?

I LOVE KTMs, but the cost in prohibitive.

That is one beautiful scoot you have there. It looks like adventure waiting to happen.

Vstroms and thier smaller siblings the Wee Strom (the 650 version) are very very very limited in the dirt when the trail gets rougher. Fine for some gravel forest service road cruising, but the location of the oil cooler and the mag wheels make it a bit fragile for anything really challenging.

KLR 650's are really pretty big and are very capable bikes for some off pavement exploring. But again not the best bike for anything really challenging (neither is my 950 SE for that matter). I know a bunch of people that ride the heck out of the KLR. A good choice.

Thanks I like it too. The SE is crazy nuts with power. A handful off road but a hoot to ride. I love mine and have even taken it on 1500 mile weekend jaunts to the northeast. It is a keeper.
