Has anyone else has been reading about the new K bikes woes? I have read about rims and rotors warping: A bunch of Airbox troubles. Final drive problems of all types. And a few other misc problems.
The only problems I recall K bikes having when they were first introduced, were: crappy grab handles for the passenger and instrument cluster problems. The new bikes seem to be much worse then that I guess I 'll have to keep mine for a few more years :>) The company here isn't half bad anyway _________________ Dom |

I love my K.
When the bombs drop the only thing left will be roaches and K bikes. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

They just recalled the brakes on one of the K1200 bikes. They recommended not even riding it to the dealer.
(This is second=hand from here: http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/972730/an/0/page/0#Post972730)
The reason I like the classic Ks is that you can do all of your own maintenance - makes it affordable to own one.
Not to mention that I'm not a big fan of the newer tupperware. I think a bike should have a gas tank. (But those K1200 GTs sure look sweet.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I agree.
This probably won't get me any more friends (you've got friends??), but the R1200RT has to be one of the ugliest fairings- I don't like the tupperware either. However...
But just today the latest issue of Cycle World arrived and IMHO the new "B-King" has cornered the market on ugly. It looks like a failed cross between two wheels and the Transformers. The tail section is god-awful and just try to put an aftermarket exhaust on it. _________________ John & Cathy

OTG,
I agree about the looks of those new BMW's. BUT...IMHO when they changed to the inline 4 across the frame, BMW gave away some of the "unique-ness" of their engine designs. Kind of what makes a BMW a BMW.

Many are beginning to question BMW's quality. It all started with R bike surging. Now we have rear drive failure and numerous K bike recalls. Reports following the 2007 Iron Butt and some nasty posts on the bmw.com message board haven't helped. Some say the problem isn't widespread. This doesn't matter, however. The fact is the potential for failure exists. Anyone spending $15 large or more shouldn't have to worry about this matter. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

Mike & I were (are) hard core K1100 fans (he had an RS and I had an LT), and we both have the same GT now. It's awsome. Doesn't subract from my 1993 K1100LT that was bought by a nice man in Alabama (I'm in Southern California). The new GT's are awsome. _________________ the Luz |

By the way, a dealer in Tucsan was selling the K1200R bikes to people with an American Express card for $5000. I almost bought one just for fun. _________________ the Luz |

Let me just say this about that
This bike is WICKED fast and I run out of road or nerve before it runs out of velocity. Steve has seen 160+ mph GPS confirmed.
My only complaint is the clutch is hard for me to hold in for long times like at lights. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Very very very Jealous.
Glad someone is enjoying one.
And how the hell can they sell a 15K+ bike for 5 grand? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

The market sux for selling right now because people arn't out buying them.
Steve's been trying to sell this K12R for months, he even painted it himself from yellow to that evil Gloss black, and still there's no market *shrug* _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I am pretty sure the $5000 Amex deal was very limited and not a dealer wide event. You had to register to buy at that price and only about 2 were sold that way nationwide. I could be wrong, it has happened before.
But Gwen is right. The KR market is SOFT...$3000 discounts and 5 free payments from BMW are killing the resale market. I guess I will just leave mine plugged in on the tender and ride this some more...

Steve, you're killing me.
I ride a K, but my soul is in the dirt, with a history of BMX and MTN bike racing, and learning to ride motorcycles on old XR 75s and CR80s and 125s.
Wife said I can get a Dual sport after we buy a house, which is like 2years away.
Still wondering what would be the best for me, something bombproof, economical and maintainable with enough cojones to kick up some serious dirt for my massive bulk. (I am 6'3" 280)
Was thinking about a KLR 650 but it might be too small/cramped for me.
How to the Vstroms hold up in the dirt?
I LOVE KTMs, but the cost in prohibitive.
That is one beautiful scoot you have there. It looks like adventure waiting to happen. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Vstroms and thier smaller siblings the Wee Strom (the 650 version) are very very very limited in the dirt when the trail gets rougher. Fine for some gravel forest service road cruising, but the location of the oil cooler and the mag wheels make it a bit fragile for anything really challenging.
KLR 650's are really pretty big and are very capable bikes for some off pavement exploring. But again not the best bike for anything really challenging (neither is my 950 SE for that matter). I know a bunch of people that ride the heck out of the KLR. A good choice.
Thanks I like it too. The SE is crazy nuts with power. A handful off road but a hoot to ride. I love mine and have even taken it on 1500 mile weekend jaunts to the northeast. It is a keeper. |

That's not really my aim. Sure the occasional stream cross or hillclimb, but no real technical stuff. I prefer fire roads, old RR lines and tight singletrack with the occasional jump thrown in.
Yeah I know I will need an upgraded suspension, but my main concern (as it was with my MTN bike) is overall strength. I want a bike that can handle my weight and the heavy throttle hand I have.
And I want something thats not insanely uncomfortable on the road, with enough power to cruise at 85+. Since I live on LI, where most off roading is basically outlawed, I would have to drive to Jersey or CN for some real trails.
Those on AVGRider say an XR650L would be better for my size.
