I can't beleive the amount of hot air the RS puts out. I thought it would be cooler than the LT but it's most definitely hotter. It seems like a lot of hot air gets pushed out the area where the tank seat and side panel meet.

In looking at the fairing, it seems as though the little "scoops" in the right and left lowers might actually contribute to the problem. I'm considering putting some duct tape over them (on the inside) to see if that helps.

Anybody else have thoughts on this?

I thought the same on my LT Drake. The small areas where there is a space hot air blows through there like a blowtorch.

I was telling my wife just yesterday that in the winter I would try and stuff my hands on the sides of the tank for some warmth (my heated grips don't work Sad ) yet none could be found.

Now in the summer, 85*+ it's like a furnace.

I considered plugging the areas as well but though better of it. That heat has got to go somewhere. Maybe punching some more ventilation would alleviate the problem some, but how to go about doing that without wrecking the aesthetics of the bike?

If they're both not working, then I'd recommend pulling the switch apart and cleaning the contacts and checking the wires on the back of the switch. You can do it without having to pull the tank or tear the bike apart. If any of the wires are busted off, then carefully resolder them.

The contacts inside the switch often get corroded and you can clean those. Pull the switch out of the dash panel and the use a small screwdriver to pry the back out of the switch out and then scrape the contacts with the tip of a small screwdriver.

(and now I'll stop hijacking my own thread. Very Happy )

/continue hijack Shocked

The wiring by the main cluster is fried. My mechanic rewired both grips but he said the wiring by the harness was toast.

I suppose when the grips kept blowing 15amp fuses and I put in a 20, clicked it on and a thin plume of smoke drifted up from the cluster might have been a good indication that wasn't a good idea. Rolling Eyes

Duck,

A K100 Radiator makes the difference between RED Gonads and BLISTERED Gonads. If you change the radiator and put a manual o'ride switch in to turn on the fan when YOU want to... you'll just have WARM Gonads, like on a K100 2V.

if you can take it......remove the lower fairings....all that hot air will find a new path.

also try insulating the entire fuel hose system with pipe insulation.....this has worked like a charm. The fuel system is a closed loop system so all the heat under the tank heats the fuel that returns to the tank heating the tank thus getting hotter and hotter as the ride goes on......this is cheap but kinda time consuming.

The trapped heat is a side effect of excellent aerodynamics.........John Robinson's book lists the KRS fairing as one of the most efficient "same drag as a TZR250"

I have the fairing off to install cruise so I was planning on doing that anyhow.

On one of my K75s, there was even factory insulation on the fuel rail - I'll be doing that on the project K75 and wish they had it for K11s.

I wonder if the fariing efficiency explains why the factory specs show 100hp and 3.9sec 0-60 for a K100RS4V while the K11RS has 100hp and a 3.8. Or maybe they just published those specs to sell new bikes.

Anybody ever tried installing the fork cups? (like on the K75RT, K100RT and K100LT.)

I saw mention of this on another board. I guess the theory is that those help push some cooler air up under the tank.

I'm thinking that some carefully placed, drilled holes would not ruin the looks and would give the heat a place to go. I did some drilling to the front cover of an R100RT to cool the electrics and it didn't ruin the looks of the bike.

I honestly hate to say it.....but good luck on getting rid of that problem. I've tried everything known about these bikes and seen others try all kinds of things to mitigate the heat....i.e. variable rheostat for the fan, lager k100 radiator, winglets, etc., etc.. After 12 years of riding K11's and the last one for 10 years....that was the primary reason for selling mine. I simply couldn't go through another summer of blisters on the inside of my thighs on hot day. Now cold days, that's a different story, then it's a real life saver. Ideal bike for cold weather...but has some definite issues in the warmer climates. Crying or Very sad I would have loved to keep my RS, just couldn't take it any longer Arrow

P.S.
There is one thing that will work more then anything I've heard of....I'm referring to RS models....and that's to remove the belly pan. I can't remember who filled me in on that one...but I couldn't bring myself to half undress my baby (kind of like removing your womans pants and taking her out in public...not good especially if she looks anything like a stripped RS), so never did do it as a solution.
