Just looked at factory manual again and my axle setup is just the opposite. Locking bolt on right side and oval hole through axle is on left side. Ridden 300 miles so far and wheel still on. Weird tho ...

Ok, then I'm looking at it backwards. The axle shaft pulls out from the left side sitting on the bike.That's what that hole is for.
