Hi everyone! So I’ll try to keep this long story short with you all. I have a modified 94’ k1100rs that’s been running super rich for a while. After troubleshooting for quite some time now, I stumbled across a post saying that the coolant temp sensor light needs to be connected, and functioning, as it goes to the motronic and affects the fueling to save the engine if it’s overheating. Well I don’t have the original cluster anymore so I was hoping I could just wire in a little bulb to complete the circuit. Looking at the wiring diagram, it names the color of one of the wires, but not the other (that I could find anyway. After staring at it a while)… does anyone happen to know what the color of the wire is that completes the circuit? Any assistance is MUCH appreciated. Green wire which is switched power to the instrument cluster.

Do you happen to know what bulb would work, or if it matters what kind is used? I’m seeing that the cluster uses 12V 4W and 12V 3W bulbs but doesn’t specify where they go. _________________ 1994 BMW K1100RS |

The stock warning bulbs are 3W. The 4W bulbs are for the two turn signal bulbs.
I run LEDs in my K11 clusters. They're 0.2W. And they're early LEDs so they are polarized and don't allow a reverse current.
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the presence of a temp warning bulb does not impact engine temp as your first post suggests.

Okay cool! I’m very skeptical as well, but the post made a very compelling case. I’m also running out of things to troubleshoot, so I’m just trying everything. The issue is that it’s running rich, it’s not anything with the engine temp itself. Sorry if that’s the way I communicated it, that’s my bad. The theory is that the light needs to be functioning, and if it’s not, it’s essentially the same as the light being on, and it can supposedly affect the fuel ratio causing a rich condition. _________________ 1994 BMW K1100RS |

With your wiring, do you also have the air temperature sensor connected?
The factory sensor would have been located in the top of the air-box.
I have not seen a fuel management system yet that doesn't look at both water temperature and intake air temperature for mixing fuel.
Like Duck, I have doubts that the high temperature indicator would affect mixture. _________________ Ride safe.

Hey Scott! Yes the intake temp sensor is hooked up. I have doubts about it doing anything either, but I’ve pretty much done everything I could do at this point. Just running out of ideas so I’m grasping at straws hoping that maybe by some miracle it does do something! Haha. I just wanna ride the darn thing, but I just replaced the o2 sensor and after one ride it’s already caked with soot. so I’m trying to get it sorted before I ride again. I'm going to e-mail you a couple of Motronic documents from BMW.
They include information on the older K's and R series bikes, so you have be sure to read the sections carefully to make sure you are looking at the correct info. _________________ Ride safe.

Okay, so I only got the 2nd email for some reason.. but I did read through and I was expecting it to be much more complicated! Found the section talking about the coolant sensors and yeah it doesn’t seem like the light is gonna have an impact on anything.. Okay! So I installed the light and it lit up with turning the ignition on. Upon starting the bike it ran TERRIBLY and sounded like it was missing cylinders. After keeping it running for a few seconds it came right around and was running beautifully. Used to sound like it had a cam in it with a really unstable idle and now sounds nice and smooth. Took it for a ride and hit higher rpm’s easier than normal and no strong fuel smell anymore! Upon returning home, the light does not turn on with ignition anymore. Is this normal when the bike is warm? Im trying to stay skeptical here and I’ll do more riding tomorrow (it’s 11:00 pm here lol). But it really seems like this may have been what has been stumping me this whole time. I’m HOPING anyways. _________________ 1994 BMW K1100RS |

Thank you Scott! I got it this time haha. I guess my last question is, is coolant temp warning light supposed to always come on when turning on the ignition? It did when I first hooked up the light, but now it doesn’t. Thanks _________________ 1994 BMW K1100RS |

My coolant temp light always comes on when I turn on the ignition as a "lamp check". It goes out as soon as the motor starts. _________________ Ride safe.
